Virginia

Actions Underway

  • Virginia is both a state and locally funded court system.  The state pays the salaries of the judges and most clerical staff.
  • Virginia’s budget was reduced by $8 million over the ‘08/’09 and ‘09/’10 fiscal years, giving the Judiciary the flexibility of how to manage it.  The Courts will probably return $3 million in FY2008/2009 and $5 million in FY2009/2010.
  • In addition, the Judiciary anticipated an increase of $2 million in the criminal fund budget to pay court appointed attorney fees in excess of the statutory caps.  The General Assembly removed the additional $2.0 million from the waiver budget keeping it at $4.2 million.
  • The $500,000 appropriation to run Virginia’s Judicial Evaluation Program was removed from the FY2009/10 budget.
  • Virginia has not implemented any layoffs, but has implemented hiring delays, cancelled conferences and has taken other cost cutting steps.
