Maryland

Overview

  • The Maryland Judiciary is funded by both the state and the counties.  Judges and Clerks of Court are funded by the state.  Other court personnel are funded by the counties.  Payment of other expenses is divided between the state and the counties.
  • The Maryland Judiciary’s budget was not reduced in FY09 and the FY 10 budget remained at approximately the prior year level.
  • Maryland expects that they will need to cut back on the expansion of programs in support of families and problem-solving courts.
  • Maryland has started to implement electronic filing, citations, signatures and warrants; to develop an electronic document management system and an integrated case management system; to implement video conferencing, video arraignments and video digital recording.
  • Maryland is looking at the centralization of financial, administrative and clerical functions.
