Arizona

Actions Underway

  • The Arizona court system is primarily locally funded.  80% of the state funds go to probation services.  Salaries of some of the judges are paid by the state.  State Court funding has been cut $34.1M from FY08 – FY10.  As a result, Arizona anticipates delays in filling judicial vacancies as well as cutting 116 non-judge positions in FY 2010.
  • Arizona has imposed a hiring freeze.  There were no state raises.  Furloughs and further staff reductions will remain on the table for the coming year.
  • One time transfers of accumulated funds earmarked for other purposes.
  • Since 2000, the Judicial Branch's General Fund allocation has decreased by 13%.
  • In Maricopa County, due to a recent cut back in March, the night courts have been eliminated; a truancy and delinquency program has been shuttered; an early intervention program that helps prevent problems with youth has been cut back; self-service centers at Superior Courts in Maricopa County, which help citizens file for divorce or custody without having to hire attorneys, have been cut back; a juvenile-detention unit will close.
  • Arizona is moving towards electronic filing as part of its electronic case management system.  It does not anticipate changes to its court organization nor legal procedures.
