Juries and jury trials have received unprecedented attention in recent years. Much of the focused has been pretrial jury management issues and in-court trial procedures. In the process, judicial and bar leaders have become increasingly aware of the importance of pattern jury instructions (PJI), especially their credibility to trial judges, lawyers, and reviewing courts in terms of legal accuracy and clarity to jurors. To meet increased expectations, many PJI committees are considering new internal procedures to address organizational and technical issues such as the optimal committee composition, membership qualifications, and publication and dissemination strategies.

To provide PJI members with an opportunity to exchange information about these issues and to learn about effective practices, the National Center for State Courts (NCSC), the Ohio Supreme Court (OSC), and the Ohio Judicial Conference (OJC) will co-host a two-day National Conference on Pattern Jury Instructions on April 17-18, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus, Ohio. The conference will feature plenary sessions on topics of interest to all PJI members and concurrent sessions focusing on unique issues related to civil or criminal PJI committees and to PJI committee management and reporting. All members of state and federal PJI committees are invited to attend.

To subsidize conference expenses, there is a conference registration fee is $150.00 that entitles each attendee to all education sessions, the pre-conference reception at the Columbus Barristers' Club, and the conference dinner and keynote address at the Ohio Judicial Center. A block of rooms has been reserved for conference attendees at the Hyatt Regency Columbus at the rate of $129 single occupancy/$149 double occupancy for the evenings of April 16 and 17, 2008. To guarantee a room, attendees should make their reservations no later than March 31, 2008.
