Ethics, Conduct, and Discipline


Each year (beginning in 1994) the National Center for State Courts publishes a report now entitled "Future Trends in State Courts." The purpose of this report is to support the strategic planning efforts in the court community.   Each publication contains several articles written by NCSC staff and court experts from around the country. Individual Future Trends articles published since 2001 that relate to this topic are listed to below.


Trends 2008 John M. Greacen.  The Court Administrator's Perspective: Research on "Procedural Justice"—What are the Implications of Social Science Research Findings for Judges and Courts?.  This article describes how judicial outreach should be administered and carried out. It looks at all parties involved in this shift.

Cynthia Gray.  Judicial Ethics Advisory Committees.  Judges often need advice about whether their actions both on and off the bench comply with the highest standards of judicial ethics.  Many states use judicial ethics advisory committees to provide judges with that guidance.

 

Trends 2005

Wanda Romberger and Madelynn Herman.  Court Interpreter Ethics Programs: Where We Are and Where We Should Be Going?  This article addresses the needs for court interpreter ethics programs, strategies for implementing such programs as well as information on existing court interpreter ethics programs.

 

Trends 2003

Ann Keith and Kenneth Pankey. Updates for 2003.  December 2003.  An article submitted for the 2003 Reports on Trends in State Courts, this document updates two issues discussed in past editions -- efforts to improve the selection of judges and budget conditions among state judicial branches.    

Trends 2001 Jose Dimas.  Competency of Counsel and the State Courts.  This article discusses the competency counsel component of the federal legislation titled the Innocence Protection Act (S. 486 H.R. 912).  The article also discusses the 2001 Congressional activities relating to capital cases and the response by the Council of Chief Justices to this debate of growing importance.

 

Trends 2000 Knowledge and Information Services.  Lawyers and Multidisciplinary Practice: A Coming Revolution?  This article discusses the issues surrounding the concept of multidisciplinary law practice, whereby attorneys team with non-lawyers to offer a broader range of services to clients.
