Rezendes, Michael et al. "Dignity Faces a Steamroller." Boston Globe (July 2006).  Part two asserts that "the 'people's court' has become the collectors' court," in that small claims courts ignore the rights of defendants in favor of collection agencies and businesses. 

Rezendes, Michael et al. "No Mercy for Consumers." Boston Globe (July 2006).  Part one illustrates the hardships suffered by debtors, and notes that defendants often do not receive notice because courts provide outdated contact information to plaintiffs.

Prince, Sue. Court-Based Mediation: A Preliminary Analysis of the Small Claims Mediation Scheme at Exeter County Court. London: Civil Justice Council (March 2004).  This study of small claims in the UK found that a high proportion of small claims cases referred to mediation settle; the proportion of cases that settle is greater if the amount in dispute is low; mediations with high emotional content and complex relationships were less successful in mediation; mediation saved judicial time; and parties were satisfied with the process.

San Francisco: Judicial Council of California, Administrative Office of the Courts (1992).  Included in the report on alternative adjudication of small claims actions, this resource also includes a report by the University of San Francisco School of Law.  (KFC1093 .C34)

Olexa, Joseph S., and Dina Rozelle. Small Claims Mediation Project in the District Court of the State of Oregon for Multnomah County. Jackson, David M. A Comprehensive Study of the Connecticut Superior Court Small Claims Session.
