CEC Website Debuts!
On June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, NCSC officiallylaunched the Center for Elders and the Courts (CEC) website.  The website has been in development for some time, and we are pleased to finally offer this resource to the court community and others interested in aging issues, elder abuse, and guardianship.

Survey Finds Ongoing Court Needs in Guardianship Cases
On behalf of the Conference of Chief Justices (CCJ) and Conference of State Court Administrators (COSCA) Joint Task Force on Elders and the Courts, the National Center for State Courts carried out an online survey focusing on adult guardianship.  The survey was carried out late 2009, and received 187 responses from judges, judicial officials, and court managers from 36 state jurisdictions.

Q & A with Elizabeth Loewy, Prosecutor on the Brooke Astor Case
Legendary New York philanthropist Brooke Astor died at the age of 105 in August, 2007.  On October 8, 2009, a jury pronounced a “guilty” verdict against the two men who had been entrusted with her financial well-being: son Anthony Marshall and estate attorney Francis X. Morrissey, Jr.  Mr. Marshall was found guilty on 14 of 16 counts and Mr. Morrissey was convicted on counts of fraud, conspiracy, and forgery.

Guardianship Conference
In 1988, following the release of the historic 1987 Associated Press report on Guardianship of the Elderly: An Ailing System, the American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging and Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law sponsored a landmark multidisciplinary guardianship symposium at the Wingspread conference facility in Wisconsin.
