Written or Recorded Instructions for Jurors

Overview

The Center for Jury Studies

The idea of providing jurors with written or recorded copies of the jury instructions to take with them into deliberations is not a very new one, though it has yet to become uniform practice across the United States.  The practice basically refers to the court preparing a copy of the instructions that a jury can reference in the event they feel they need to hear the instructions again.  The concept behind a written or recorded copy is that it will provide an immediate reference to the jury, and can help to save the court time by preventing the judge from having to personally re-instruct the jury in open court.

This module seeks to understand the issue of written or recorded instructions for jurors, and their advantages and disadvantages.
