Plain English Jury Instructions

Overview

The Center for Jury Studies

Plain English jury instructions are those that utilize common language in order to charge the jury with responsibilities during a trial.  It refers to an effort to move away from more complicated legal language, with a goal of replacing it with simpler, more comprehensible language that jurors will have an easier time understanding.  However, it is often difficult to translate legal terms and concepts into simpler language, and consequently, plain English jury instructions are still struggling to catch on.

This module seeks to explore what plain English jury instructions are and their advantages and disadvantages.
