Anonymous Juries

Overview

The Center for Jury Studies

The use of anonymous juries refers to the practice of the court withholding information regarding jurors’ identities.  As a matter of routine practice, courts utilizing this technique withhold the names, addresses, and other identifying information about jurors and their families from the parties, the counsel, the public, and the media.  The goal of this practice is to protect juror privacy and to prevent jury tampering.  It can be used in both civil and criminal cases.

This module seeks to understand the issue of anonymous juries and answer some questions regarding the practice, in addition to exploring its advantages and disadvantages.
