Supervising Probation Officer


SUPERVISORY PROBATION OFFICER – PRE AND POST DISPOSITION SUPERVISION: Family Court Social Services, Location varies. Duties: Incumbent is responsible for managing one of the Pre and Post Adjudicated Probation Supervision Units. Ensures timely dissemination of juvenile cases to probation officers, effective investigations, validation of the initiation of cases in the juvenile social file, facilitation of family group conferences, development of pre-trial reports to support sound case management, service coordination and supervision (including home and school visits and curfew checks), as well as consultation with the Office of the Attorney General and defense counsel and families of youth throughout all phases of adjudication. Serves as an experienced manager for case management, services coordination and supervision of youths and their families, ensuring that probation officers under their supervision operate from a strength-based approach, emphasizing positive youth and family development. Additionally serves as a member of the supervisory management team within the division, lending assistance and support toward accomplishment of branch and division wide objectives. Provides a variety of investigative, pre-trial and post-disposition services and case management guidance and support to staff. Accompanies probation officers to status, trial or disposition court hearings to ensure timely submission of reports and, when necessary, presents cases in court. Works a flexible schedule to include one or more evening tours of duty to provide supervision over evening activities. Identifies needs and plans and conducts training programs for staff. Ensures staff members are abreast of cutting-edge theories, practices, policies, procedures and objectives in the field of juvenile justice. Prepares monthly narrative and statistical reports detailing work of the unit. Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in social sciences, plus five years of experience managing social service programs geared toward juveniles and their families. (A relevant master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience.) Appointees to this position must not have passed their 37th birthday in the month of appointment in order to qualify for mandatory law enforcement separation/retirement at age fifty-seven. Previous qualifying law enforcement experience under CSRS or FERS may be counted toward eligibility. SUPERVISORY DRUG COURT PROBATION OFFICER: Family Court Social Services, 409 E Street, NW, Washington, D.C. Summary: Duties: Incumbent is responsible for managing the Juvenile Drug Court Treatment and Supervision Unit. Monitors and supervises a team of substance abuse counselors, probation officers, one deputy clerk and interns, providing guidance, training, and evaluation, and ensuring compliance with division and branch policies, procedures, goals and objectives. Serves as an experienced member of a supervisory management team, lending assistance and support in accomplishment of branch and division objectives. Ensures all substance abuse services, referrals and written and oral interpretations of therapeutic services are carried out in a manner consistent with established guidelines and protocols governing substance abuse treatment as set by the D.C. Department of Health’s Addition Prevention and Recovery Administration. Ensures probation supervision/monitoring (including home and school visits, curfew checks, pre-trial plans, progress reports and social studies) are conducted consistent with established guidelines and standards set by the division. Identifies need and plans and conducts training programs for staff. Ensures staff members are abreast of cutting-edge theories and practices in the delivery of substance abuse treatment and prevention, as well as alternative community-based services to ensure continuity in services delivery to youths and families. Prepares monthly narrative and statistical reports detailing work of the unit. Qualifications: A master’s degree in social sciences, plus four years of experience managing social service programs geared toward juveniles and their families. Appointees to this position must not have passed their 37th birthday in the month of appointment in order to qualify for mandatory law enforcement separation/retirement at age fifty-seven. Previous qualifying law enforcement experience under CSRS or FERS may be counted toward eligibility. Additionally, appointees must have current Level II Certified Addiction Counselor certification to practice substance abuse counseling and clinical supervision in the District of Columbia, and the ability to acquire a Master Addiction Certification (MAC) within no less than two years following acceptance of the position. PROGRAM MANAGER – PRE & POST PROBATION SUPERVISION: Family Court Social Services, 409 E. Street, NW, Washington, D.C. Duties: Incumbent manages the Pre and Post Disposition Probation Supervision Branch of the division, and is responsible for ensuring effective accomplishment of duties and responsibilities necessary to accomplish timely and effective case processing, dispositional recommendations, case management and supervision, as well as additional activities relative to assigned goals and objectives. Interacts with the judiciary, juvenile justice stakeholders and other court systems staff to achieve cooperative relationships and ensure proper workflow across satellite offices including: pre-trial investigations, home and school visits, curfew monitoring, collateral interviews, case management, service referrals, community supervision, and public education on division initiatives. Serves as an experienced member of the branch responsible for cases assigned and designated to appropriate satellite offices, based on criteria established for all satellite offices and police service areas. Serves as an experienced member of the senior management team, lending assistance and support toward accomplishment of system-wide objectives. Directly supervises Supervisory Probation Officers responsible for various satellite offices, and instructs following initial assessment and initiation of cases, based on social factors and public safety risk through adjudication. Ensures carrying out of monthly caseload audits, and tracks statistical data on all activities. Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in a social science, plus five years of experience with social service programs geared toward juveniles and their families. Appointees to this position must not have passed their 37th birthday in the month of appointment in order to qualify for mandatory law enforcement separation/retirement at age fifty-seven. PROBATION OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR: Probation-Mohave County . Duties: Under general supervision, oversees, manages, supervises and administers the day-to-day and overall operations of one or more work units of the Mohave County Probation Office. Serves as a working supervisor in handling a case load. Participates in a variety of probation-related personnel management, fiscal management, records management, office management, space and equipment management, public education, research and advisory services and intergovernmental relates related to probation operations and services. Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree with a preference in the behavioral sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university (as required by Arizona Revised Statute A.R.S. 8-203 and Part 6, Chapter 1, Section 6-106 of the Arizona Code of Judicial Administration) AND four (4) years experience in the fields of corrections or probation, or working with offenders or delinquents in some equivalent capacity with one (1) year in an administrative or supervisory capacity OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge and skills have been achieved. Salary: $1,804 Bi-weekly. (2008)

DEPUTY CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES, JUVENILE PROBATION DEPARTMENT: Judicial Branch of Arizona in Maricopa County. Summary: This position reports directly to the Chief Probation Officer and performs work of considerable difficulty in preparing and maintaining the budget, administration, development, organization, and direction of Juvenile Probation Department, Court and County Strategic Plans. Duties: Leader in budget preparation and presentation; Participates in the planning for future programming and strategies for implementation; Continually reviews organizational structure to assure decision making at lowest level; Supervises the day-to-day operations of administrative staff; Trains staff for future supervisory responsibilities; Supervises the research of new programs, procedures and trends; Coordinates and participates in training and staff development programs; Directs development and implementation of departmental policies and programs; Coordinates the hiring, transfer and reassignment of staff; Participates in other personnel matters; May act as the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer as required; Represents Maricopa County Judicial Branch in the most positive manner with prospective formal and current clients, suppliers and the community we serve, interacts effectively with a diverse group of staff, and other customers of our Services; Effectively learns from and uses operating practices of the department and Maricopa County Judicial Branch; Upholds the mission statement; Maricopa County Judicial Branch – Provide people with the access to a public forum and for dispute resolution and court services so citizens can realize timely, fair, economical, individualized justice and to also serve the community by assisting children and families in need; Handles confidential information with tact and discretion. DEPUTY CHIEF PROBATION OFFICER: Phoenix, Arizona. Duties: The principal responsibilities of the Deputy Chief include: Interprets County and Probation Department policy and directives to the management staff of the various divisions and institutions to ensure the department’s goals and objectives are consistent with the County’s mission and strategic plan; reviews operations and secures compliance with policy, Court Administrative Orders and State mandates; consults with and advises management staff on problems concerning personnel, procedures and services; evaluates continuing operations for effectiveness in accordance with evidence-based practices and, if indicated, initiates corrective action through discussion with the management staff involved; evaluates budgetary needs and participates in budget conferences with the Chief Probation Officer including preparing and administering the annual budgets according to the guidelines of Budgeting For Results; assists the Chief Probation Officer in all roles including creating a vision that is realized through the development and implementation of the department’s strategic plan; studies and reports on anticipated needs, services and staff safety issues for evidence-based practices in field operations and best practices in detention and implements as needed; evaluates the overall effectiveness of training programs and plans for future staff development needs; enlists the support of community groups and professional organizations to obtain strategic direction and collaborative partnerships for the overall administration of the department; works effectively with Judges and other Court personnel in a collaborative manner to resolve Court-wide issues; acts for the Chief PO during absences. Qualifications: The  ideal candidate must possess the minimum of a Master’s Degree in the Behavioral or Social Sciences, Corrections, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field and 6 years of increasingly responsible correctional experience; OR any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates potential ability to perform the duties of the position. Preferred Experience with Juvenile Detention Facilities and national American Correctional Association (ACA) guidelines. Salary: $60,507 - $90,771. (2005)

MASTER PROBATION OFFICER: Paterson, New Jersey. Duties: Under the direction of the Vicinage Chief Probation Officer or appropriate supervisor, mentors and coaches line officers; acts as lead worker to team members or other group of non-subordinates in assigned tasks; plans, organizes and supervises a caseload of chronic or acute offenders, evaluates overall client performance and conduct, enabling effective recommendations for action (e.g. prosecution, mediation, incarceration, continuance or conditional release); mediates non-dissolution matters such as child support, custody , or visitation rights; designs case management processes; develops policies or procedures to ensure efficient court or unit operation, makes decisions and recommendations or complex or critical work problems presented in the organization or unit; formulates policies, procedures or practices for organization, unit or program; and hears cases. Qualifications: Open to employees in Passaic Vicinage who have graduated college with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 24 credit hours in the behavioral or social sciences; are serving in the titles of Senior Probation Officer for five years or serving as Probation Officer for ten years. Salary: $47,938.73-$77,445.80. (2005)

SUPERVISING PROBATION OFFICER: County of Napa Courts. California. Summary: Currently the essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: direct, supervise, and train subordinate staff; schedule, assign, and evaluate their work; supervise and be responsible for the overall activities of an assigned unit of Adult or Juvenile Probation Officers; assume responsibility for a variety of personnel actions including assisting with selections and promotion, conducting performance evaluations, and recommending disciplinary actions and dismissals; review court reports, case work reports, correspondence, and other documentation prepared by the staff; participate in establishing and developing departmental rules, policies and procedures; explain, interpret, and implement departmental policies and procedures to staff; develop and maintain in-service training programs for staff. Qualifications: Four years of professional probation experience. Possession of a master's degree in public administration, administration of justice, corrections, criminology, sociology, psychology, and of the behavioral sciences, or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.  Equivalent to graduation from a four accredited college or university with a major course work in public administration, administration of justice, corrections, criminology, sociology, psychology, and of the behavioral sciences, or a closely related field.  Applicants must be United States citizens. Must have possession of valid California Driver's License.  Complete mandated Standards and Training for Corrections program requirements.  Persons employed in this class must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Salary: 4,886.00-5,845.00/month. (2004)
