Technical Assistance Specialist: Justice Program Office, American University, Washington, D.C. Summary: This is a full-time, professional position requiring specialized knowledge of criminal justice system operations and interagency dynamics. This position reports to the Principal Investigator of the project to which he or she is assigned. Duties: The principal duties of this position include: (1) planning, coordinating, and evaluating the delivery of technical assistance and training services (e.g., the conduct of workshops, conferences and focus groups, the performance of on-site management consulting studies, etc.) by project staff and consultants (including self) to state/local courts and criminal justice agencies; (2) providing research and analytical support to BJA in its Congressional reporting activities; and (3) maintaining liaison with and collecting and analyzing performance data on approximately 100 national organizations that provide training or technical assistance services with BJA funds. Qualifications: Education: Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree in criminal justice administration or related field highly desired. Work History: Incumbent must have at least two years’ experience working in a criminal justice agency or community-based organization in a professional capacity. Other qualifications include: excellent communication skills, written and oral; ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently and adhere to strict deadlines; attention to detail; demonstrated research and analytical skills; and proficiency in Microsoft office, and with relational database software. Familiarity with use of SPSS is desirable, as is prior experience working in U.S. Department of Justice-sponsored programs. Salary: $37,000-$53,000. (2007)

Public Relations

Communications Specialist: National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, Reno, NV. Duties: Under the supervision of Department management, performs all aspects of editing and producing Department publications, articles, reports, and grant applications; serves as liaison to NCJFCJ Manager of Communications to produce Juvenile and Family Justice TODAY Magazine, special Journal issues related to Department subject matter, ensure adherence to publishing guidelines, and work on cooperative projects; acts as liaison to typesetters and printing agencies for production of Department materials. Works closely with all PPCD staff to achieve high quality reports and publications for national dissemination. Is responsible for assisting the maintenance of up-to-date information on the Department website. Qualifications: Completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited university and three years’ experience in a related field; good working knowledge of publication procedures; experience in editing; ability to work with juvenile justice and child welfare professionals; academic experts; and general public. Travel may be required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: High level of independent working ability and initiative, and excellent communication skills. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word software; demonstrable skill in follow through on detail-oriented projects; knowledge of juvenile justice and child welfare system; ability to understand subject matter and write substantive reports and articles; expertise in English grammar, usage, syntax and legal terms. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Is responsible for writing and editing of periodic reports to funding agencies; writing and editing of articles for submission to the NCJFCJ TODAY magazine; designing, development and writing of twice-yearly Director’s Reports; developing miscellaneous articles, overviews, reports, and additional resource materials regarding PPCD initiatives; assistance in maintaining up-to-date information on Department website; working with outside vendors in production of publications; coordinating across Department divisions/projects to enhance communication and reporting regarding all grant deliverables; and performing typographical, grammatical, and style editing of Department publications and grant applications or reports developed by other staff. CONFERENCE AND MEETING PLANNER: National Center for State Courts, Williamsburg, VA. Summary: The Institute for Court Management (ICM) the educational division of the National Center for State Courts is seeking applicants for a newly created conference and meeting planner position. ICM offers professional development programs in a classroom environment and through distance learning to court personnel in the states and US territories. The incumbent will assist professional staff, faculty, and customers in planning, coordinating and delivering professional development programs. Duties: Responsibilities include proofing course materials, obtaining educational material and organizing course materials; negotiating hotel/educational facility arrangements; serving as liaison with course hosts; facilitating faculty travel arrangements and logistics; providing administrative support in the office and on site, and; monitoring program budgets and reconciling program expenses. Responsibilities also include assisting professional staff in the distance learning environment. Qualifications: To be considered for the position, applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, business, catering/hotel management, education or a related discipline and three to five years of work experience is required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with clients, faculty and staff are required. The ability to work as part of a team, prioritize work and follow through efficiently and effectively on assignments is required. Knowledge of and ability to utilize effective meeting/conference planning principles, practices and procedures are preferred. Experience in adult educational environments is preferred. Proficiency in using PC word processing, database, and spreadsheet software applications is required. DIRECTOR: University of Mississippi Law Center. Summary: The University of Mississippi Law Center is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Mississippi Judicial College. The Mississippi Judicial College (MJC) is a specially funded division of the Law Center. It provides training and continuing education for persons affiliated with Mississippi’s judicial system including trial and appellate judges, county court judges, municipal court judges, justice court judges, court administrators, chancery court clerks, public defenders, and court reporters. Annually, over 2,000 men and women attend the training and continuing legal education programs administered throughout the state by the MJC. Qualifications: Candidates must possess a J.D. degree from an ABA-approved institution or Masters in education or related field. Candidates’ experience and accomplishments must demonstrate administrative and leadership ability and the capacity to deal effectively with judges, lawyers, legislators, and other persons affiliated with the Mississippi judicial system. Three years prior experience with continuing legal education programs and administrative experience is required. Demonstrable ability to organize, lead, motivate and manage personnel and their tasks. Ability and personality to quickly develop relationships of confidence with public officials. Record of professional and personal conduct that will reflect credit on the University and MJC. (2006)

LAW OF JUDICIAL ADMINISTRATION FACULTY POSITION: School of Government, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Summary: Tenure-track faculty position to specialize in the law of judicial administration, which includes topics like the jury system, jurisdiction, judicial ethics, constitutional history, contempt, court system structure, and judicial official selection. Duties: Will research and write for, advise, plan and administer courses for, and teach North Carolina court officials concerned with these topics. Audiences include appellate and trial judges, clerks of court, prosecutors, defenders, magistrates, as well as executive branch and legislative branch officials, and the public. Work is centered in Chapel Hill , but requires occasional travel and consultation around the state. Faculty appointments are year-round (rather than for the 9-month academic year). FACULTY POSITION, JUDICIAL ADMINISTRATION: School of Government, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Summary: Tenured, tenure-track, or fixed-term faculty position, depending on qualifications, to specialize in judicial administration and leadership. This person will work in the newly established North Carolina Judicial College to develop and deliver educational programs about court system management for NC judges, clerks of court and court administrators. Duties: Responsibilities include planning and administering continuing education, instruction, action research, advising, and publication. May also teach Masters of Public Administration students. Librarian

LIBRARIAN/ANALYST: The National Center for State Courts, Williamsburg, VA. Summary: The National Center for State Courts, a private non-profit court improvement organization is seeking applicants to fill a librarian/analyst position. Duties: This position is responsible for coordinating library operations including acquisitions, serials, cataloging, circulation/ILL, systems administration, library education and training for a specialized library on court administration. Additionally, this position will serve as an information analyst responding to information requests on topics related to court and judicial administration. Qualifications: Applicants are required to have a Masters degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution and at minimum of three years’ experience. Experience in a law library or a legal environment is preferred. Considerable knowledge of on-line library systems OCLC, AACR2, LC Classification and LCSH is required. CATALOG LIBRARIAN: Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law & Stuart Graduate School of Business, Chicago, IL. Summary: Under the general direction of the Director of Bibliographic Services, the Catalog Librarian is responsible for cataloging library materials, including continuing resources in both print and electronic formats. The Catalog Librarian also co-supervises two library specialists with the Government Documents Librarian. Duties:  Providing full (or other appropriate level) original cataloging and authority control in a variety of print, non-print and digital formats in a variety of subject areas; supervising all serials-related projects; contributing to planning, policy and procedure development of department; performing other duties to enhance the collection and services of the library such as (but not limited to): assisting in the development, implementation, and evaluation of cataloging and bibliographic service policies, procedures, and publications based on current information and developments in the field/literature; responding to telephone, mail and e-mail inquiries from patrons seeking information; individual and group training; and other duties as required. This position will also have some responsibility for managing electronic resources (e-journals and databases). Qualifications: M.L.S. from an A.L.A.-accredited graduate program, a working knowledge of cataloging principles and procedures including AACR2R, LC Subject Headings and Classification, and MARC 21 formats is essential, as is a working knowledge of standard bibliographic and other reference tools, familiarity with a range of automated processing activities, some supervisory experience and a demonstrated commitment to customer service, excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are critical, including experience in procedure development and writing documentation, very customer service oriented, has a friendly and helpful manner, can work effectively with faculty and all levels of staff, possesses an aptitude for complex, analytical and detailed work, and can manage diverse assignments in a rapidly-changing and demanding environment. Preferred: Substantial experience cataloging serials; previous library experience cataloging specialized business and/or legal materials; experience with Voyager, the library's integrated library system; one year of cataloging experience; experience with OCLC and/or RLIN; demonstrated interest in the issues and standards related to metadata; experience with SFX and e-resource management tools; teaching or training experience or teaching aptitude; and experience with course management software (e.g., Blackboard, TWEN).  Salary is negotiable and competitive, commensurate with experience. TEACHING LIBRARIAN: The Florida Coastal School of Law Library. Summary: The Teaching Librarian reports to the Head of Public and Instructional Services. The Teaching Librarian leads the development and maintenance of the library’s legal research instruction program and is primarily responsible for its implementation. The Teaching Librarian is part of the Reference staff and works with the other reference librarians in providing service and support to the student body. Duties: Work with the legal research and writing instructors to develop the legal research module of that program, work with faculty in support of scholarly research and class instruction.  This includes developing and providing class research modules, and creating documentation (handouts, bibliographies, pathfinders, etc.), develop and present formal and informal library instruction for full range of available resources, participate in rotation at the Library’s Reference Desk, including some evenings and weekends, assist patrons in the evaluation and use of print, electronic, microform, and other resources, participate in collection development, keep current on developments in information technology that could be used to improve library reference and instructional services, perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: MLS and JD, 5 years of experience in formal legal research instruction, strong service orientation and ability to work well with others in a team atmosphere, enthusiasm, flexibility, and a positive attitude, excellent oral and written communication skills, detailed knowledge of print and electronic legal research tools, experience in the training and instruction of groups is preferred. Volunteers

VOLUNTEER TRANSLATOR: inMotion: Justice for All Women, New York City. Duties The student/volunteer will translate or review a translation of a pro se law library into various languages used throughout New York City --the student/volunteer may translate as many booklets as he/she wants. The pro se library addresses the limited availability of representation for an increasing number of women who cannot afford legal assistance. The Library consists of 11 booklets that cover the following subject matters: Paternity Proceedings, Adoption, Custody and Visitation, Guardianship, Divorce, Spousal Support, Child Support, Orders of Protection, Domestic Violence and Immigrant Women, Social Security Number and Name Changes, and New York City Courts. It is our hope that the library will be translated into numerous languages so that they can be used by pro se litigants, volunteer attorneys and community organizations who deal with clients whose first language is not English. Students/volunteers who can do written translations into Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Turkish, Urdu, and Yiddish are needed. Speakers of other languages not listed here are encouraged to inquire. Estimated time to completion of project: depends on booklet, 5-15 hours per booklet. Qualifications: Proficiency in written translations from English to another foreign language. (2007)

LEGAL ASSISTANCE FOR WOMEN VOLUNTEER: Chrysalis (Center for Women and Girls), Limited Legal Services Clinic & Representation. Summary: The Legal Assistance for Women (LAW) Program volunteer assists volunteer attorneys in: Providing pro se assistance and other limited legal services to low-income women in family law matters at Limited Legal Services Clinics and follow-up services off-site; and Providing pro bono legal representation in family law cases to low-income women screened by Chrysalis. LAW Program Volunteer Attorneys are supervised by the Chrysalis Family Law Attorney and the volunteer attorney whom they are assisting. Duties: Attend 12-hour training program provided by Chrysalis. Attend volunteer orientation and observe trained volunteers at a “buddy shift” for the Limited Legal Services Clinic. Assist at Limited Legal Services Clinic by interviewing clients, helping clients organize documents and gather information, drafting documents for review by attorney, and providing referrals. Assist volunteer attorneys with Pro Bono Family Law Representation by helping clients organize documents and gather information, drafting documents for review by attorney, and researching legal issues. Complete paperwork related to Limited Legal Services Clinic and report the number of hours volunteered off-site. Honor volunteer commitments. Notify LAW Program staff in advance of any schedule conflict, absence, and change in contact information. Qualifications: Interest in family law issues. Law student or paralegal (preference given to 2nd or 3rd year law students and experienced paralegals). Awareness of and respect for diversity. Good communication, organization, and time management skills. Ability to maintain client confidentiality. (2007)
