Law Librarian
INFORMATION SPECIALIST II: Permanency Planning for Children Department, National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Reno, NV. Summary: The position will provide technical assistance support through research of existing resources and the development of written materials relating to the field of child abuse and neglect to judicial officers, court staff, and other system professionals. Information Specialists assist on a number of special projects with internal staff and external stakeholders that requires strong investigatory skills, thorough knowledge of subject matter, an excellent oral and written communication. Duties: Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: providing technical assistance to judges and other professionals in the field of child abuse and neglect; gathering and evaluating materials and producing abstracts for the PPCD Resource Library Database; producing varied and accurate correspondence, reports, and other materials; composing and preparing correspondence in assigned subject areas; and other projects as assigned. Some travel is required to participate in meetings or trainings in conjunction with special projects and provision of on-site technical assistance. INFORMATION SPECIALIST II: National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Summary: Under the supervision of professional personnel, performs duties of a responsible nature requiring initiative and discretion; knowledge of assigned subject area; and proficiency in distribution of information and/or materials to requesting parties using a number of delivery methods including, but not limited to, printed materials, adult education seminars, and/or computer technology. Duties: The Information Specialist will complete various special projects as assigned and work with internal staff and external stakeholders to provide technical assistance on a variety of topics including, but not limited to, juvenile justice, family courts, domestic violence, child welfare, and court systems. INFORMATION SERVICES SPECIALIST: United States Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit. Atlanta, GA. Summary: The Information Services Specialist will report to the Circuit Librarian or Deputy Circuit Librarian. This is a new position created to provide educational training, knowledge, and technical expertise supporting the areas of chambers operations, library and research functions, which will add to the information base of the Eleventh Circuit court libraries in Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Duties: Provide and coordinate circuit-wide information technology (IT) training. Design, develop, evaluate, and revise training curriculum, materials, written procedures, user guides, and manuals. Develop and conduct end user training for court or judiciary developed applications. Provide IT support services to chambers staff and staff of other court units. Research, evaluate, and document emerging technology and digital products in order to maintain technology literacy and creative application of technology resources. Develop training and other materials to promote digital products and services. Train library staff and court personnel. Provide help desk support and routine to moderately complex troubleshooting for software applications and technical program problems. Provide support for mobile computing devices and remote access. Qualifications: A minimum of a bachelor’s degree and two years of experience, including at least one year equivalent to work at CL 25 level. ELECTRONIC RESOURCES LIBRARIAN: U.S. Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit. Miami, FL. Summary: The Circuit Library of the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals is accepting applications for the position of Electronic Resources Librarian. The duty station will be the Federal Courts Library, Miami FL. The incumbent will also serve as the branch librarian for the Federal Courts Library, James Lawrence King Building, in Miami. The Electronic Resources Librarian will report to the Circuit Librarian or Deputy Circuit Librarian. This is a new position created to take the lead in assessing, coordinating, developing and deploying electronic products, services, and digital collections which will add to the information base of the Eleventh Circuit court libraries in Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Additional duties include managing the court library in the James Lawrence King Building, Miami, Florida. Duties: Develop, coordinate, maintain, and deploy electronic services and digital collections for research and reference. Manage technical issues associated with electronic resources and coordinate efforts with the acquisitions and reference librarians. Coordinate the promotion of electronic resources and the continued development of current awareness services. Responsible for electronic resources training and the development of supporting materials for library staff and other users. Provide back up support for the administration of the library’s internal website and electronic newsletter. Manage one of two branch libraries located in Miami, provide print and electronic resources for judges and their staffs and other court personnel located primarily in the James Lawrence King Building, Miami. Travel within the Southern District of Florida and Eleventh Circuit as needed. Qualifications: M.L.S. degree or equivalent from an ALA-accredited library school, two years of library experience including at least one year equivalent to work at CL 25 level. LAW LIBRARY CLERK: New York Unified Court System. Summary: Law Library Clerks perform a variety of clerical duties in a law library which may also include the lead responsibility of a library with limited scope or subject specialization that serves five (5) or more full-time(or the equivalent) judges, law clerks, and court attorneys. Law Library Clerks also perform other related duties. Duties: Provides answers to questions regarding the location of books, periodicals, and other material in the library collection or directs library users and other library staff to the location of needed reference sources outside the law library. Reads and interprets publishers` instructions or other available information to determine how t accurately file supplements to books, looseleafs, and other materials. Conducts a bibliographic search for legal information and locates cases by retrieving correct reference source and identifying location of case in question. Annotates existing records by finding appropriate record and recording information in correct location. Shelves/files or retrieves books, looseleaf supplements, microfiche, and other materials that are organized using complex alphabetical, numerical,
chronological, or subject codes. Performs simple mathematical calculations and extracts numerical information from written materials or computer files and prepares vouchers. Records expenditures/payments in the appropriate location in a ledger (either on paper or using the computer) using basic principles of bookkeeping. Prepares correspondence to order library materials or to answer routine inquiries. Instructs library patrons in how to use legal reference sources and machines (e.g., how to use microfiche reader/printer). Trains and supervises subordinate staff, makes work assignments, and evaluates performance. Prepares cards for the card catalogue by typing, writing or word processing appropriate, standard information in correct format onto cards or obtains card from computerized cataloging service. Types pocket cards, book tabs address labels, and other materials. Maintains lists (e.g., unpaid vouchers, overdue books, new holdings, interlibrary loan requests) by making additions and deletions and by checking the accuracy of information. Opens, date stamps, logs, and sorts incoming mail to prioritize mail according to importance, timeliness, or other criteria relevant to library operations. Checks material in and out of library by recording relevant information on appropriate records. May operate electronic data processing equipment to utilize word processing, fiscal, or other programs in order to answer inquiries, prepare reports, draft budgets, maintain fiscal records, and other documents. Qualifications: High school diploma or the equivalent and two (2) years of clerical experience in a library.
PRINCIPAL LAW LIBRARIAN: New York Unified Court System. Summary: Under general supervision, Principal Law Librarians are responsible for providing professional library service and assisting the Chief Law Librarian in the formulation and implementation of statewide legal research collection policies and directly participating in statewide library planning. They evaluate existing library systems and services for sufficiency in meeting the needs of the users of the collection, and set standards for the currency, relevance and completeness of these systems and services. They serve as a resource for new developments in the law library profession, resolve complex questions related to the application of library classification and cataloging systems, and coordinate resource sharing among several collections. Principal Law Librarians, in concert with the local administrative office, are responsible for budget preparation, resource allocation, and other administrative duties. Principal Law Librarians supervise Senior Law Librarians, Law Librarians and clerical personnel, and may perform legal research and other related duties. Principal Law Librarians generally have direct responsibility for a legal research collection that is extensive and specialized. Such collections are the largest in the Unified Court System and have access to several automated legal research and library systems, and regularly serve a very large number of judges. In addition, Principal Law Librarians may be responsible for several chambers collections and overseeing the operations of several geographically separate collections (other than those in individual chambers). Duties: Assists Chief Law Librarian in developing and implementing statewide legal research collection policies and procedures. Prepares analyses of effectiveness of library operations and implements changes. Oversees the preparation of budgets; monitors and revises resource allocations to comply with fiscal conditions. Consults with judges, court personnel, and others to identify research alternatives for complex issues and provides information about available legal resources. Trains and supervises subordinate staff, makes work assignments, monitors progress, and evaluates staff performance. Reviews and evaluates legal research materials of all formats to determine items to be added or withdrawn from the collections. Formulates collection development policies suited for the library or collection, monitors effectiveness and initiates revisions as appropriate. Prepares statistical and other administrative reports. May independently perform complex legal research. Qualifications: One year of permanent, competitive class service in the Senior Law Librarian title or three (3) years of permanent, competitive class service in the Law Librarian title; Master`s degree from an accredited school of library science and five (5) years of work experience in a law library or a library specializing in the social sciences, e.g., political science, economics, business, criminal justice, sociology, one (1) year of which must be in an administrative position; or Law Degree from an accredited law school and five (5) years of work experience in a law library or library specializing in social sciences; e.g. political science, economics, business, criminal justice, sociology, one (1) year of which must be in an administrative position.
LAW LIBRARIAN V: Supreme Court, Carson City, Nevada. Duties: Under the general direction of the Law Librarian, this position is responsible for and supervises the technical services and government documents sections of the law library; plans, organizes and directs the work of these sections; coordinates the work of these sections with other sections of the law library, for example cataloging; assists the Law Librarian in the formulation of policies and procedures for new and existing programs; performs research with analysis in response to Supreme Court staff requests; develops public programming. This position also will perform other duties typical of a Librarian, such as: collection development (for depository collection); oversee automation of materials control and check-in; perform reference interviews; assist users in performing legal research; process interlibrary loan requests; establish and maintain circulation procedures; manage special library services, the state legal materials exchange program, and the Depository Library Program; work with vendors to correct and resolve all ordering, claiming, and billing problems. Qualifications: : A Master’s degree of Library Science from an ALA accredited library school. Five years of professional level library work including a minimum of two years of supervisory work including administrative responsibility; OR Graduation from a four year college or university. Six years of professional level library work, including at least six years in a law library, and minimum of two years of supervisory work, including administrative responsibility. A JD from an accredited law school can be substituted for years of experience. (Note: Although a Master’s degree of Library Science is the standard professional qualification for a librarian, many incumbents of librarian positions in law libraries have grown into their positions based on their special expertise in the field of law. LAW LIBRARIAN: New York Unified Court System. Summary: Under supervision of a Principal Law Librarian, Senior Law Librarian or other supervisory court personnel, Law Librarians are responsible for providing professional library service, including legal research assistance, original cataloging, assistance with acquisitions, library management in some libraries, clerical supervision, and collection-related responsibilities. Law Librarians operate a variety of library and research automation systems, participate in electronic reference and technical consortiums. Law Librarians assist higher-level law librarians in managing large diverse legal research collections in the Unified Court System, or have primary responsibility for operation of a small, less complex legal research collection that serves a small number of judges. In addition to responsibility for a main body of legal research material, Law Librarians may have responsibility for other collections, including those in individual chambers, in one or more separate geographic allocations and perform other related library and administrative duties. Operates acquisitions system, including bibliographic searching, order preparation, receipt, payment and reporting. Prepares reports and monitors expenditures from library budget and provides information for budget compilation. Trains and supervises subordinate staff, makes work assignments, monitors progress, and evaluates staff performance. Conducts tours of the library for groups of visitors and library orientation programs for new court personnel. May conduct independent legal research and participate in special projects. Qualifications: Master`s degree in Library Science or Library Information Sciences from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university and one (1) year of professional work experience using library automation, providing legal reference services or involving library administration. This experience must have been in a law library or library information center with a significant legal collection. OR Law Degree from an accredited law school and one (1) year of professional work experience using library automation, providing legal reference services or involving library administration. This experience must have been in a law library or library information center with a significant legal collection.

other supervisory personnel. Duties:
The Judiciary Coordinator 1 will be responsible for
acquiring books, periodicals and other materials for the law
library and Judges’ chambers libraries within budget
constraints and based on established policy. Specific duties
will include coordinating purchasing requirements including
submission of bills for processing; updating the law library
collection; coordinating the content of law library collections,
law library policies and procedures vicinage-wide; maintaining
an up-to-date inventory of current law library holdings;
researching improvements to the law library; keeping detailed
records of law library expenditures; assisting law library
customers, including pros e litigants; recommending projections
of library spending for the preparation of budgets and spending
