Director, State Law Library

HEAD LIBRARIAN: Connecticut Legislative Library. Summary: A head librarian for the Legislative Library, providing professional nonpartisan assistance to legislators and staff. Duties: Successful candidate will participate in and oversee all aspects of library operations including reference, collection development, budgeting, supervision, evaluation, training, marketing, and strategic planning. Qualifications: strong reference background (federal and state government knowledge preferred); proficiency with legal resources, print and electronic; teamwork and customer service orientation; demonstrated leadership skills in a collaborative environment; excellent listening, oral, and written communication skills; demonstrated knowledge of professional library science principles and practices.  Must be able to function well in fast paced environment and work extended hours. Requires an MLS from accredited program plus a minimum of seven years of relevant experience. Salary: $95,796 (2010).

LAW LIBRARY/SELF HELP CENTER CONSULTANT: Second Judicial District Court of Nevada, Washoe County. Summary: As of July 1, 2009, the Second Judicial District Court (“Court”) assumed the responsibility for the finding and operation of the existing Washoe County Law Library (“Library”).  The Court wants to consolidate its operation of a pro per Self Help Center (“SHC”) with the Library into a unified approach to legal information and access that will be designed and oriented toward future demands for the next ten to fifteen years. Duties: Inventory of current assets of Library and SHC, including personnel, collected fees and collections. Inventory of current services and public service events delivered  by Library and SHC. Needs assessment from significant parties both “inside” and “outside” the current system. Trends research as to futures of both libraries and pro per service delivery models. Delivery and presentation of final report. (2009)

LAW LIBRARY DIRECTOR: Public Law Library, Contra Cost County, CA.  Summary: Superior Court are seeking a Library Director/ Law Librarian to work jointly for both organizations. Duties: Approximately 75% of the Director’s time will be spent for the Public Law Library, overseeing staff and services and working with the Library Board of Directors to implement a strategic plan to maximize regional coordination of library services and continue to enhance the quality of law library services to County residents.   Approximately 25% of the Director’s time will be spent for the Superior Court, managing and maintaining its collection of law books. Qualifications: This opportunity requires an MLS from an ALA-accredited program, or a JD from an ABA-accredited law school, as well as law library experience, excellent legal research skills and demonstrated ability to manage and supervise. Experience developing web pages is also necessary, along with strong English communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work some evening and weekend hours.  Salary: 65,000 - $85,000 (2008)

DIRECTOR, STATE LAW LIBRARY: Utah. Duties: Oversees daily operation of law library and satellite libraries, responsible for long range strategic planning, goal development and utilization of resources, supervision and direction of staff, administers operating budget. Qualifications: Required: Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited university, Masters degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA accredited university. Preferred: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including modern law library management, library technology, grant proposal and patron services. Salary: $25.74 - $31.98/hr. (2007)

Assistant State Law Librarian

 

LIBRARY TECHNITION: United States Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit. Atlanta, GA. Summary: Incumbent will perform duties associated with maintaining records and the collection for the Circuit Library and will provide information and referral services to all library users. Duties: Under the supervision of the Technical Services Librarian, prepares purchase orders for new titles as requested by judicial personnel, or renewal orders as notified by vendors following established guidelines, using UNICORN, the integrated library system in use by the Circuit Library. Assures that all information on purchase orders is correct and appropriate before submitting for signature of Technical Services Librarian. Communications with judges, court staff, publishers, vendors and the Administrative Office is necessary. Tracks receipt of purchases in conjunction with satellite librarians. Resolves problems of non-receipt and/or duplication of shipments, etc. including verbal and written communications with vendors and consignees. Creates receipt data for purchase orders and serials on UNICORN. Processes requests for changes, cancellation and/or transfer of existing subscriptions for libraries and all consignees and updates files. Under supervision of Technical Services Librarian, performs cataloging tasks including updating catalog records, item records and holdings in UNICORN. Under supervision of Technical Services Librarian, duplicates and maintains serials control records for Circuit Library and satellites. Edits serial prediction records, for Circuit Library and satellites, as publication patterns change to keep records accurate and consistent throughout the circuit. Creates and maintains routing lists for circulating issues with the Circuit. Receives, checks in, and files looseleaf services, pocket parts, and advance sheets to keep collection current and maintained. Performs proper shelf maintenance as needed. Suggests ways to improve operations and notifies the Technical Services Librarian of problems regarding any of the work assigned. Performs clerical duties and general office duties such as answering telephone, photocopying, work processing, sorting mail. Assists with filing, updating collection, shelf-reading, weeding and shifting as necessary in Circuit Library and performs special projects with branch librarians as needed. Serves as initial point of contact for judges, law clerks and other library patrons, over the phone, locates needed information or directs individuals to an appropriate source for further assistance. Organize, scan and index documents for the digital collection. Use a broad range of software applications for scanning, calibration, and image processing. Qualifications: Skill in the use of Windows-based personal computers and basic office applications software. Knowledge of SIRSI’s Unicorn System helpful. Aptitude for performing functions requiring a high degree of accuracy and careful attention to detail. Must be energetic and organized; able to perform multiple tasks and work well with others. Moderate to heavy physical activity may be involved in opening or lifting boxes of books, shifting books, and maintenance of library collections. College an advantage. Library experience an advantage. Salary: $35,900 - $44,515 (2010).

ASSISTANT STATE LAW LIBRARIAN: New Mexico Supreme Court Law Library. Summary: The New Mexico Supreme Court Law Library is currently seeking one (1) permanent, part-time (20 hours per week) Assistant State Law Librarian in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This position is under the direction of the State Law Librarian. Duties: Provides legal reference service in the afternoons and early evenings (until 6 p.m.) 6 to 8 hours per week; Configures and maintains computers, both client workstations and stand-alone computers, and provides support, including troubleshooting, for computers in the library; Trains patrons and staff in legal research, government documents research, computer applications, and library techniques and procedures; Updates digital legal information resources. Qualifications: Master's degree in Library Science (or equivalency certificate from the State Library) and one year of full-time work experience in a library with reference duties. One year of work in a law office or law library dealing with legal information services or legal research, or equivalent course work (one semester of legal research, one semester of substantive law and one semester of reference work). Substantial law course work is preferred. Knowledge of New Mexico Law and some Spanish is preferred. Salary: $20,096 to $31,400. (2007)

ASSISTANT STATE LAW LIBRARIAN: Summary: Under the general supervision of the State Law Librarian, coordinates and acts as the liaison to the federal depository library program and ensures library compliance with federal laws and regulations which govern the handling of materials from the Government Printing Office (GPO). Duties: Processes and records all documents received from the GPO in accordance with library procedures, classifications, cataloguing guidelines, and GPO bibliographic regulations; reviews initiatives, policies, rules, and regulations promulgated by the GPO to ensure compliance with the library depository program standards; represents library interests to other state and regional depositories; prepares and stands for federal inspections; converts document holdings from paper to electronic format using database management program; staffs reference desk and assists patrons by answering pro se legal and government document reference questions; and manages microfiche collection. Qualifications: A Master's degree in library science with some computer course work and experience working under a Government Documents Librarian.
