VOLUNTEER FOR THE DRUG COURT PROGRAM (GED TUTOR): Superior Court of New Jersey, Ocean Vicinage. Summary: The Ocean County Superior Court is seeking volunteers to work individually or in a group setting to tutor Drug Court participants in preparation for the GED. Duties: The selected candidate would evaluate the GED pre-test and determine areas that need improvement and tutor the participant in said area (Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science). Hours must be flexible and can be determined by tutor and participant. Salary: Unpaid. (2008)

VOLUNTEER FOR THE JUVENILE CONFERENCE COMMITTEE: Superior Court of New Jersey, Ocean Vicinage, NJ. Summary: The Ocean County Superior Court is seeking volunteers to join the Juvenile Conference Committee (JCC) for its Manahawkin, Barnegat, Berkeley, Toms River, Lacey and Little Egg Harbor communities. JCC members are court appointed citizens who conduct confidential, informal hearings regarding complaints against juveniles who allegedly commit minor acts of delinquency such as criminal mischief, trespassing, shoplifting, simple assault and disorderly person’s offenses. Duties: The JCC makes recommendations to the presiding Family Court Judge which may include counseling, restitution, community work, a letter of apology or other sanctions/conditions that will help the juvenile become a responsible person. JCC members meet once a month starting between 3pm and 7pm at standard locations. Summary: The Superior Court in Mohave County is seeking to appoint a resident of Mohave County from the Bullhead City area to fill a public member vacancy on the Judicial Employee Merit Commission. The commission meets every other month and is responsible for advising the presiding judge on personnel matters affecting the Superior Court which includes employees from probation and juvenile detention, the office of the clerk of the court, conciliation court, and the superior court divisions. The commission is responsible for recommending rules, processes and procedures for advancing professionalism and efficiency in the judicial service. It is also empowered to hear employee grievances involving matters such as application of merit system rules. Commissioners serve in a volunteer non-paid status. VICTIM SERVICES CRISIS INTERVENTION VOLUNTEER: Victim Services Office, Bullhead City, AZ. Summary: Under general supervision, respond 24 hours a day to assist victims immediately following the crime in whatever capacity is needed within the scope of the program. Serves as a liaison between the victim and law enforcement and medical personnel. Duties:  Responds to requests from law enforcement to assist victims of crime through crisis intervention. At the request of the crime victim, accompany them to court hearings/trials. Assist victim in making phone calls to family and friends. When necessary, arrange for emergency shelter and food for crime victims. Arrange transportation. Explain, in terms they can understand, the criminal justice system as it applies to their situation. Identify victims and witnesses needs resulting from crime. Provide referral to other social service agencies for assistance. Provide information and referral for victim compensation program. Attend monthly staff and training meetings. Attend any additional trainings as deemed appropriate (at the expense of the program). Must complete two (2) mandatory ride-a-longs with law enforcement agencies within jurisdiction. Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers. Complies with and promotes safe practices in agreement with the safety rules and procedures set forth in the Loss Control Program. Performs related work as required. Qualifications: Individual must possess the desire to assist people in “Crisis” The ability and flexibility to respond to 24 hour on call situations. VOLUNTEER TRANSLATOR: inMotion: Justice for All Women, New York City. Duties: The student/volunteer will translate or review a translation of a pro se law library into various languages used throughout New York City--the student/volunteer may translate as many booklets as he/she wants. The pro se library addresses the limited availability of representation for an increasing number of women who cannot afford legal assistance. The Library consists of 11 booklets that cover the following subject matters: Paternity Proceedings, Adoption, Custody and Visitation, Guardianship, Divorce, Spousal Support, Child Support, Orders of Protection, Domestic Violence and Immigrant Women, Social Security Number and Name Changes, and New York City Courts. It is our hope that the library will be translated into numerous languages so that they can be used by pro se litigants, volunteer attorneys and community organizations who deal with clients whose first language is not English. Students/volunteers who can do written translations into Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Turkish, Urdu, and Yiddish are needed. Speakers of other languages not listed here are encouraged to inquire. Estimated time to completion of project: depends on booklet, 5-15 hours per booklet. LEGAL ASSISTANCE FOR WOMEN VOLUNTEER: Chrysalis (Center for Women and Girls), Limited Legal Services Clinic & Representation. Summary: The Legal Assistance for Women (LAW) Program volunteer assists volunteer attorneys in: Providing pro se assistance and other limited legal services to low-income women in family law matters at Limited Legal Services Clinics and follow-up services off-site; and Providing pro bono legal representation in family law cases to low-income women screened by Chrysalis. LAW Program Volunteer Attorneys are supervised by the Chrysalis Family Law Attorney and the volunteer attorney whom they are assisting. Duties: Attend 12-hour training program provided by Chrysalis. Attend volunteer orientation and observe trained volunteers at a “buddy shift” for the Limited Legal Services Clinic. Assist at Limited Legal Services Clinic by interviewing clients, helping clients organize documents and gather information, drafting documents for review by attorney, and providing referrals. Assist volunteer attorneys with Pro Bono Family Law Representation by helping clients organize documents and gather information, drafting documents for review by attorney, and researching legal issues. Complete paperwork related to Limited Legal Services Clinic and report the number of hours volunteered off-site. Honor volunteer commitments. COURT WATCHER: Tallahassee Police Department, Employee Resources Division, Court Watch Program, Tallahassee, FL. Summary: The Tallahassee Police Department in conjunction with the Steele-Brook Institute helped sponsor a citizen watch group committed to objectively evaluating some elements of the legal justice system. Citizens may participate in this program as volunteers with the Department. Duties: Court Watchers objectively observe a half-day session each week in a courtroom setting. Watchers evaluate the prosecutor, defense attorney, and judge on preparedness and professional behavior. This includes, but is not limited to, presentation, organization, communication skills and experience level. Court Watchers assess the key players’ demeanor towards the victim, witness, and defendant as well as the presentation of evidence. Volunteers observe and evaluate court proceedings from a lay perspective to help shape a better system of justice. Qualifications: Court Watchers must be at least 30 years of age and represent a cross section of the community. Volunteers for this position, and their family members, may not be victims of a recent violent crime. Court Watchers may not have an arrest or conviction record for violent crime; or, have a case of any nature pending before the courts. Commitment: Four hours per court session. The frequency of the sessions is limited only by the availability of the volunteer. Certification Training: Training includes observation and evaluation techniques; courtroom etiquette; the judicial process; legal concepts and terms; and the roles of the judge, prosecutor, and defense attorney. Once the education process is complete, a certified Court Watcher will supervise on-the-job (OJT) training sessions during live court proceedings. The duration of initial training may vary depending on the availability of instructors. Continuing education workshops with community professional leaders will help reinforce program goals and maintain focus. (2007)

GUARDIANSHIP MONITORING AND GUARDIANSHIP AUDITING VOLUNTEERS: Superior Court of New Jersey, Union Vicinage. Duties: The Guardianship Monitoring Program uses trained volunteers to oversee guardianship cases involving incapacitated adults (including the elderly and developmentally disabled). The volunteers then report to the court concerning the well-being of the wards and the status of their assets. The Guardianship Auditing Program engages trained citizen volunteers (often with a background in accounting, finance, bookkeeping and the like) to examine court-required financial reports from guardians to ensure that timely and accurate accountings of wards’ assets are submitted. Qualifications: Must be ale to speak, read and write English; Bilingual skills would be helpful. Must be at least 18 years old. Satisfactory results from criminal background check and fingerprint screening. Good communication and interpersonal skills. VOLUNTEER COURTHOUSE RECEPTIONIST: Superior Court of New Jersey, Union Vicinage. Duties: The Union County Courthouse is a large building complex consisting of several buildings housing a number of different courts and departments. The Courthouse Receptionist is responsible to direct litigants, attorneys, and visitors to their proper destination within this complex. It is important that they display a calm and friendly disposition and reflect the court image of being friendly while providing good service. CHILD PLACEMENT REVIEW (CPR) BOARD MEMBER: Superior Court of New Jersey, Hudson Vicinage. Summary: CPR boards consist of court appointed citizens who monitor the cases of all children who have been placed outside of their homes by the Division of Youth and Family Services (DFYS). Duties: Board members collectively review case plans and conduct interviews of involved parties to make recommendations that are in the best interest of the child to the presiding Family Court Judge. The boards meet on a biweekly basis. Some boards meet at 9:30 a.m. while others meet at 5:30 p.m. Qualifications: Must be a resident of Hudson County who is at least 18 years old. COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATES (CASA): Superior Court of New Jersey, Hudson Vicinage. Summary: CASA volunteers are trained to represent children in the foster care system, acting as “a child’s voice in court.” Duties: With the goal of placing each child in a safe and permanent home, volunteers undergo 30 hours of training to become advocates. Working on a case requires a commitment of four to five hours per month and additional in-service training throughout the year. CASA is a national organization with programs in most counties of New Jersey. Qualifications: Must be a resident of Hudson County who is at least 18 years old. MUNICIPAL COURT MEDIATION VOLUNTEER: Superior Court of New Jersey, Hudson Vicinage. Duties: Court appointed volunteers mediate cases between disputing parties in Hudson County Municipal Courts. As a neutral party, a mediator helps citizens discuss the issues and explore options in resolving the dispute themselves. Mediators devote between two and six hours per month during court business hours. Qualifications: Must be a resident of Hudson County who is at least 18 years old. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS ASSISTANCE: Superior Court of New Jersey, Hudson Vicinage. Duties: Volunteers take part in assisting victims navigate through the court process by making follow-up telephone contact with victims, making referrals to service providers, and conducting customer service surveys. SUPERVISED VISITATION: Superior Court of New Jersey, Hudson Vicinage. Duties: Volunteers monitor visitation sessions between a non-custodial parent and child, when family relations or other mitigating factors deprive a child of a satisfying relationship with a non-custodial parent. Visitation takes place on Tuesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hudson County Administration Building. Interns

COURT INTERPRETER UNPAID INTERNSHIP: Court Interpreters’ Unit, Bergen County, Superior Court of New Jersey. Summary: Internships are available for persons seeking careers in Court Interpreting. Duties: Inters will: 1)observe various types of court proceedings and court interpreting events; 2) prepare draft translations of documents; 3) practice interpreting in limited situations under the supervision of a staff interpreter; and 4) assist with compiling statistics, providing information to the public, and conducting ad hoc research projects. The internship requires 72 hours during an academic term (six hours a week for twelve weeks) or 80 hours during a summer (eight hours a week for ten weeks). WINTER 2007-08 DISPUTE RESOLUTION INTERN: New York State Dispute Resolution Association, Troy, NY. Summary: The selected candidate will work with the Director of Education and Professional Development to evaluate and design statewide training programs for mediators, arbitrators, and other neutrals. Duties: Work will include gathering data from past trainees, conducting follow up conversations and synthesizing results as a guide to future trainings. VICTIM ADVOCATE ASSISTANT (VOLUNTEER INTERN): Victim Assistance Center, Sonoma County, CA. Summary: The Victim Assistance Center is dedicated to upholding the rights of victims of crime and strives for the empowerment and recovery of victims emotionally, physically, and financially. The Victim Assistance Center staff delivers services to crime victims with dignity, compassion, and respect. Duties: Call all victims who were sent outreach letters to follow-up on the need for victim services and refer victims to an Advocate if service is requested. Assist program advocates with filling out Victim Compensation claim applications and requesting crime reports from various law enforcement agencies. SELF-HELP LAW PROJECT INTERNSHIP: Helena, MT. Summary: The Montana Legal Services Association (MLSA) provides free legal assistance in civil cases to low-income people. It is the mission of MLSA to protect and enhance the civil legal rights of, and promote systemic change for, Montanans living in poverty. MLSA summer interns will work side by side with MLSA staff in an effort to provide, protect and enhance access to justice. D.C. LAW STUDENTS IN COURT PROGRAM INTERNS: Washington, DC. Summary: The D.C. Law Students in Court Program (“LSIC”) is a client-centered litigation clinic in the District of Columbia with students from five D.C. law schools participating. In addition to being one of the city’s oldest law school clinics, LSIC is also one of its largest and most successful legal service providers. Each year, representatives from LSIC provide free legal assistance to nearly seven thousand individuals and make thousands of appearances in court. Summer internships are with the Civil Division, which primarily represents low-income tenants facing eviction and/or uninhabitable living conditions. We also provide advice and pro se assistance to persons with matters concerning contract and property disputes, disabilities, receiverships, torts, and bankruptcy. Duties: The primary responsibility of LSIC summer interns is staffing the Program’s walk-in clinic. Our clinic is open daily to anyone with legal questions or who seeks legal advice. Students interview individuals who call or come into our office, and advise them of their rights and responsibilities in a variety of legal situations. Interns work one-on-one with experienced supervising attorneys. Types of assistance include drafting pleadings for pro se litigants, writing persuasive letters, negotiating with other attorneys, and educating litigants on their legal rights and options. In addition to staffing our clinic intake, interns perform investigations for on-going LSIC cases at clients’ homes, administrative offices, and the D.C. courts. When feasible, interns may represent clients in administrative hearings before the D.C. Office of Adjudication. When time and workloads permit, interns undertake research and writing projects related to current legal issues. WEB DEVELOPMENT INTERN: Indiana Supreme Court, Indianapolis, Indiana. Summary: Generally, performs all functions, duties and responsibilities assigned to him/her by the Chief Justice, Chair of JTAC, the Executive Director, the Director/Counsel of Trial Court Technology and the Web Coordinator/Documentation Specialist. Duties: Assist the Web Coordinator with development and maintenance of the Indiana judicial website (www.IN.gov/judiciary), including, but not limited to: creating HTML web pages using Macromedia web software. ADMINISTRATIVE SPECIALIST 2 (CONFIDENTIAL): Morris and Sussex Vicinage, Superior Court of New Jersey. Summary: The Municipal Division is seeking a motivated individual to perform a high degree of administrative, customer service, and mathematical reasoning tasks to assist the Superior Court division and better serve the 55 Municipal Courts in Morris and Sussex Counties. Attention to detail, accuracy, thoroughness, and strong organizational and communication skills are essential functions of the position. Summary: Atlantic/Cape May Vicinage is seeking a pro-active manager with exceptional customer service, interpersonal and organizational skills to function as the ombudsman for court users.
