PROBATION/PAROLE ASSISTANT: Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency for the District of Columbia (CSOS), Washington, DC.  Duties: The incumbent prepares supervision report forms and a variety of referral and case management forms.  Compiles statistics and assigns probation cases to probation staff.  Prepares and maintains time and attendance records and carries out related payroll support functions.  Inputs probation cases data into computer terminal, entering corrections and providing background information and related case research for probation staff.  Maintains communication with judicial support personnel, other Court staff and performs related liaison activities with other criminal justice agencies and/or personnel.  Qualifications: Must have one year of administrative or clerical experience.  Must also demonstrate ability to use computerized equipment.  Quality Ranking Factors:  1) Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing.  2) Demonstrated proficiency in use of personal computer.  Annual salary range:  $19,884 - $28,260. PROBATION OFFICER: King County District Court, Seattle, Washington.  Duties: Conducts and writes pre-sentence investigations; assesses problem areas including alcohol or drugs, domestic violence and mental illness; assists probationers concerning problems that affect individual probation plans; assists in vocational education or employment; contracts and corresponds with other agencies related to individual in or to monitor activity and progress; writes final disposition reports and presents to the court with recommendations.  Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in social/behavioral sciences, but graduate work or master’s degree preferred.  One year interviewing and social/psychological diagnostic experience, preferably in the criminal justice system.  Substitution:  Graduate course work or special education and work experience in diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism, other substance abuse, domestic violence and mental health may be substituted for the work experience on a month-for-month basis.  Must be well organized and have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.  Must complete the requirements of WAC 139-210 Correctional Services Academy training within six months of employment and have met or be willing to meet the requirements of WAC 275-19 Qualified Alcoholism Assessment Officer.  Union membership required.  Annual salary range: $35,350 - $44,934.  EOE. (1997)

PROBATION OFFICER BILINGUAL (SPANISH & ENGLISH): Superior Court of New Jersey - Essex Vicinage, Criminal Division, Newark, NJ.  Duties: Under direction, performs the work as required by any court under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey Supreme Court including, but not restricted to, conducting investigations both pre-dispositional and post-dispositional in nature; exercises supervision over defendants, adjudicated or convicted offenders, or others who require supervision or assistance by court order; enforces orders for child support and alimony payments; conducts custody investigations; and does related work as required and/or mandated by court decision or rule.  Qualifications:  Graduation from a four-year course at an accredited college or university with a major course of study in the social or behavioral sciences.  Applicant must be bilingual in Spanish and English.  A Certification is currently not available for this title.  The employee selected will be appointed provisionally.  To be regularly appointed, the selected individual must apply for the exam issued by the Department of Personnel, successfully pass and be at rank reachable for appointment.  Annual salary range:  $26,573 - $44,304. PROBATION OFFICER TRAINEE: Adult or Juvenile, First Judicial District of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Summary: Beginning level professional work, counseling juvenile or adult offenders in activities related to legal conditions of probation or parole.  Employees in this class participate in various phases of probation work under the close supervision of a higher level probation officer.  As experience is gained, a progressively expanding case load in range and complexity is assigned.  Duties:  confers with offender, legal representative, family, and other concerned persons, and reviews documents regarding offender’s legal and social history to conduct pre-hearing or pre-sentencing investigations and to formulate rehabilitation plan.  Compiles reports, testifies in court, and makes recommendations concerning the conditions of release or institutionalization of offender.  Informs offender or guardian of legal requirements of conditions of release, such as visits to office, restitution payments, or educational and employment stipulations.  Counsels offender and family or guardian.  Helps offender to secure education and employment, arranges custodial care, and refers offender to social resources of community to aid in rehabilitation.  Evaluates offender’s progress on follow-up basis including visits to home, school and place of employment, and secures remedial action by court if necessary.  Other duties may be required and assigned.  Qualifications:  knowledge of social and behavioral sciences with emphasis on behavior deviations and delinquent or criminal behavior.  Knowledge of community, social and economic resources and conditions, and their relationship to crime and delinquency.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with disturbed and/or maladjusted individuals as well as public agencies and institutional personnel and the general public.  Ability to express ideas clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.  Starting annual salary range:  $26,954 - $29,539. PROBATION OFFICER: District Court 9-1, Kalamazoo, Michigan.  Summary: The incumbent supervises individuals placed on probation, conducts persistence investigations, performs substance abuse assessments, and participates in various court programs.  Qualifications: include two years of experience in a criminal justice system, preferably a district court or related agency, or a combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and skills.  A bachelor's degree in criminal justice, counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field; considerable knowledge of human relations, interpersonal communications, court practices and procedures, and community agencies; considerable skill in conducting interviews, investigative techniques, information analysis, and report writing; and the ability to plan, organize, and supervise clientele are desirable.  Salary is $13.24-15.88 hourly.  (1992)

DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICER I: Mohave County, Arizona.  Duties: The incumbent performs professional entry/journey-level work involved in supervising an assigned caseload of probationers and compiling information for the court to determine punitive and rehabilitative action; conducts pre-sentencing investigations, interviews, and verification of information in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines; and performs special assignments as requested and related work as required.  Qualifications: include a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the behavioral or social sciences.  Prior probationary related work experience is preferred.  An equivalent combination of experience, education, and training that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted for the required degree.  Salary is $10.31-13.86 hourly. (1991)
