DIRECTOR, BOARD OF BAR EXAMINERS: Supreme Court of Wisconsin. Summary: The Board of Bar Examiners, appointed by the Wisconsin Supreme Court to oversee admissions to the Bar and continuing legal education, has an excellent career opportunity for an individual interested in serving as Director. Duties: In this important role the Director has overall responsibility for the bar admissions and mandatory continuing education (CLE) programs, serves as counsel to the Board, acts as liaison between the Board and government agencies and law schools, and manages the Board’s office, budget and staff within established guidelines. Qualifications: Qualified candidates will possess a blend of legal and administrative experience, to include: (1) A law degree from an accredited law school and eligibility for admission without examination to practice law in Wisconsin; (2) Five years experience as a lawyer, legal administrator or comparable experience; (3) Demonstrated management skills; (4) Exemplary oral and written communications skills. Preference will be given to candidates with: (1) Administrative experience in a legal setting that involves multiple complex issues and (2) Familiarity with computer database systems and systems development. COURT EXECUTIVE 2A (ASSISTANT CHIEF FOR THE OFFICE OF FORECLOSURE): Civil Practice Division, Office of Foreclosure, AOC, New Jersey Judiciary. Summary: The New Jersey Judiciary is seeking an experienced attorney with strong leadership and administrative skills to serve as an Assistant Chief for the Office of Foreclosure. Duties: The selected individual will direct a staff of attorneys and support staff personnel responsible for a caseload of approximately twenty-four thousand annual foreclosure filings; oversee the accuracy of legal documents and records associated with foreclosure cases, data entry and computer-related activities of the office; and the development and preparation of reports for the Administrative Director and the Supreme Court. Reporting to the Chief, Civil Practice Liaison in the Civil Practice Division of the Administrative Office of the Courts, the Assistant Chief will assist in directing operations; insure that the staff operate effectively and efficiently in processing mortgage and tax foreclosure cases applying foreclosure rules, statutes and case law; issue writs of execution and possession; calculate taxed costs; and provide courteous service to judges, attorneys, court staff and the general public. Qualifications: Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school. Three years of professional administrative and/or program management experience as a practicing attorney, including supervision of staff, as well as responsibility for program development and/or implementation. Admission to practice and current good standing as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey. Foreclosure litigation experience would be helpful. Writing samples will be requested for those individuals selected to interview. Salary: $66,300 - $96,390. (2005)
ATTORNEY 2: New Jersey Judiciary, Bar Admissions Unit, AOC, Trenton, NJ. Summary: The New Jersey Judiciary, Bar Admissions Unit of the Supreme Court is seeking an experienced attorney with proven administrative and written skills. Duties: This position entails working with the Committee on Character reviewing documentation, investigating information in preparation for hearings, conducting hearings, and preparing reports, minutes, reviews and legal memorandum for the Committee and the Supreme Court. The attorney will also work with the Court Executive to analyze policies and procedures of the Committee on Character and draft requested changes to rules and regulations. The attorney will be responsible for communicating with the attorneys on the Committee on Character, applicants and their attorneys on issues concerning certification for admission to the bar. The position will involve participation in the administration of the bar examination and other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Graduation from an American Bar Association approved law school. Three years of experience as an attorney in the public or private practice of law, including professional legal research and analyzing and evaluating legal documents, rules, regulations, and legislation. ATTORNEY III (ASSISTANT COURT COMMISSIONER): Minnesota Supreme Court. Summary: The Minnesota State Commissioner’s Office seeks an Attorney III to serve as legal counsel to the court, provide legal research and recommend case dispositions in both civil and criminal cases. Duties: Confer with justices concerning legal matters and other problems that arise in the processing of cases and provide advice and recommendations thereon. Work assignments are carried out with a substantial degree of discretion and independent judgment within the framework of laws and the policies of the court. PRINCIPAL LEGAL EDITOR: New York Unified Court System. Summary: Principal Legal Editors are responsible for coordinating internal editorial and external contractor operations to meet publication schedules and quality standards of a particular assigned publication, such as the New York Reports, the Appellate Division Reports, or the Miscellaneous Reports. Principal Legal Editors assist in supervising other legal editors, edit and prepare court decisions for publication, and perform other related confidential duties. Duties: Coordinates all aspects of the editorial production of advance sheets, bound volumes and Digest-Indexes. Reviews all editorial work on assigned publications to assure compliance with quality standards. Coordinates with outside contractor to assure timely and accurate production of assigned publications. Consults with management on the assignment of staff to achieve objectives. Assists management in the selection of opinions for publication. Provides guidance and supervision to legal editors, makes assignments, and monitors work progress. Edits opinions and decisions for correct punctuation, grammar, and spelling and checks legal citations for accuracy and conformance to established format. Prepares headnotes, tables, and indices for inclusion in the official reports. Confers with the State Reporter and individual judges regarding errors. Prepares summaries of decisions without opinion by the Court of Appeals and outlines the litigants' arguments. Qualifications: Admission to the New York State Bar; One year of experience in the Senior Legal Editor title; Equivalent legal experience. Salary Grade: 30 (2005)
MAGISTRATE: 46th District, Michigan. Summary: Serves in a quasi-judicial capacity as prescribed by statute and court rule, and as authorized by the judge. Conducts informal hearings on civil infractions, conducts arraignments on misdemeanor and felony matters, issues arrest and search warrants, and sets bond. Duties: (An * denotes duties or responsibilities judged to be "essential job functions" in terms of the Americans With Disabilities Act of ADA) Accepts and examines criminal complaints and examines witnesses, as necessary, in order to determine probable cause for issuing arrest warrants as authorized by the prosecuting attorney.* Accepts and examines affidavits for search warrants from law enforcement officers. Upon determining probably cause, issues search warrants.* Sets or denies bail in criminal matters based on seriousness of charge, likelihood of accused's court appearance, and other relevant factors. May set conditions for bond, or commit accused persons to jail in lieu of bail.* Conducts arraignments in felony and misdemeanor matters, accepts guilty pleas and sentences defendants for misdemeanors within magistrate's statutory jurisdiction, considering defendant's records and other relevant factors.* Conducts informal hearings in civil infraction matters. Explains the law and procedures to parties, hears testimony, examines witnesses under oath, makes findings of fact and conclusions of law, and assesses appropriate sanctions upon findings of responsibility.,* Accepts admissions of responsibility in civil infraction cases, considers defendants' verbal or written explanations, and makes appropriate disposition of cases including assessing fines and other sanctions.* Takes action on overdue cases, authorizing issuance of bond forfeiture notices an ensuring that necessary enforcement action is taken for failure to appear, and/or failure to comply with civil infraction judgments. CONTRACT ATTORNEY: Self Help Center, Marin County Superior Courts, California. Summary: The contract attorney will provide legal support to the Marin Self-Help Center. Duties: Duties may include initiating relationships with legal service providers and other agencies that will share common clients; developing curricula for legal literacy clinics; working with self represented litigants in preparing court documents; conducting legal research; and coordinating staff training. Qualifications: Applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications: be highly motivated self-starters; familiarity with the Marin County legal community is desirable; be licensed to practice law in California, with at least five years of experience, preferably in a civil or family law practice. SE STAFF ATTORNEY:
Full-time temporary Phoenix, Arizona. Screens prisoner
petitions for all the District Court Judges and full-time
Magistrate Judges in the District. Duties: This position
is funded through September 30, 1998. Performs substantive
screening of all prisoner petitions and motions, including state
habeas corpus petitions, motions to vacate sentence, and civil
rights complaints. Drafts appropriate recommendations and orders
for the Courts signature. Reviews all complaints, petitions,
and pleadings to determine issues involved and basis for relief.
Performs research, as required, to assist the Court in preparing
opinions. Maintains liaison between the Court and litigants.
Evaluates present procedures to determine innovations to
increase effectiveness in handling prisoner cases. Reviews the
docket of pending prisoner litigation to assure the proper
progress and advises the Court of those cases where action by
the Court is appropriate. Compiles statistics and prepares
periodic reports, as required, which reflects the status and
flow of cases. Identifies problem areas, makes recommendations
and offers solutions, as required by the Court, Administrative
Office and other officials. Provides information, guidance, and
advice to Judges, Magistrate Judges, and other personnel,
working on prisoner cases. Qualifications: Must be a law
school graduate and be admitted to the Arizona State Bar. Annual
salary range: $38,593 - $46,254. (1998)

Judicial Circuit, Clearwater, Florida. Duties: serve as
legal advisor to the chief judge and courts administrator;
implement policies, procedures, and programs in compliance with
Florida laws
and administrative rules; direct the alternative dispute
resolution division under the office of the courts
administrator; make contacts with groups and individuals in the
courts system and legal field; and travel throughout the area of
responsibility. Qualifications: graduation from an
accredited law school; membership in the Florida Bar; four
years' experience in public or court administration; four years'
experience as a practicing attorney, including public sector
work; and a thorough understanding of the operations of the
Florida Courts System. Finalists will be required to submit a
memorandum of law on an assigned, current legal issue. Salary:
