Court Reporter

COURT REPORTER: Maricopa County, AZ. Summary: The Judicial Branch of Arizona in Maricopa County is currently accepting resumes for immediate as well as future openings for Court Reporters. These positions are unclassified under the Judicial Merit System Resolution and Rules. Court Reporters are hired by and serve at the will of the Court Reporter Pool Manager. Duties: This position reports courtroom proceedings and prepares case transcripts using stenographic equipment. Court Reporters may be assigned to more than one Judge in the following areas: Criminal, Civil, Family, Probation/Mental Health, Juvenile, Tax and Special Assignments. Qualifications: The position requires successful completion of a formal training program in, and certification as a Court Reporter, per Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS 32-4001, Et seq.), which includes the National Court Reporters Association Registered Professional Reporter’s Certificate (RPR). Two years of court reporting experience preferred. NOTE: The Judicial Branch does not provide the formal training. Salary: $45,011. (2006)

OFFICIAL COURT REPORTER: U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts, Boston, MA. Summary: The U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, Boston, has an opening for an Official Realtime Court Reporter. Official Court Reporters serve at the pleasure of the Court and must comply with the requirements of the Judicial Conference of the U.S., and the Court Reporter’s Manual published by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. Periodic travel to Worcester and Springfield divisional offices is required. Duties: The Official Court Reporter records verbatim testimony by Computer Assisted Technology (CAT) for civil and criminal court proceedings. At the request of a party or by order of the Court, the Court Reporter provides transcripts within the time frames and cost requirements of the Judicial Conference. Additionally, Court Reporters are responsible for determining that billings and formats comply with Judicial Conference requirements. Court Reporters must adhere to the requirements of the Court’s Court Reporter Management Plan of this District and maintain accurate, legible records which are subject to audits. This position involves completing record-keeping forms, documenting the information contained in reports, as well as maintaining and safeguarding records until their disposition according to the statutory requirements and Judicial Conference policy. Qualifications: At least four years of prime stenographic CAT court reporting experience in the freelance field of service or in other courts or a combination thereof; Prefer successful completion of the Certified Realtime Reporter Examination offered by the National Court Reporters Association or having passed an equivalent qualifying examination. Applications will also be considered from reporters capable of doing Realtime and committed to taking the certification examination soon. Qualified by testing for listing on the Registry of Professional Reporters of the National Court Reporters Association or passed an equivalent qualifying examination. The National Stenomask Verbatim Reporters Association examinations and the Certified Shorthand reporters examinations required by some state governments may be acceptably equivalent to the National Court Reporters Association testing; Realtime Court Reporter experience and access to CAT transcription equipment; Possess and provide all necessary personal equipment and software (e.g. computer, a display, write, cable and realtime software); Have a Certificate of Merit from the National Shorthand Reporters Association, a requirement for Level III through Level V. The successful candidate also should possess: strong interpersonal skills; maturity; responsibility; poise; tact; good judgment; initiative; ability to work harmoniously with others and effective oral and written communication skills. COURT REPORTER: Superior Court of California, County of Siskiyou, CA. Summary: Under general direction, this position provides verbatim official records of all testimony and court proceedings in cases heard at Siskiyou Superior Court and in Grand Jury proceedings and may assist in the coordination of activities of per diem court reporters. Duties: Records verbatim testimony and court proceedings using stenographic equipment; asks judge for clarification of instructions, orders, or other actions to properly note the official record. Reads back all or portions of the official court proceedings upon instruction from the judge. Prepares printed or magnetic media transcripts; reviews and certifies printed transcripts of court proceedings. Maintains a variety of electronic and paper files of the portion of the court record for which responsible; prepares daily transcripts as needed; provides transcripts of proceedings on request of parties or by order of the court. Performs necessary research to verify case citations and spelling of legal, medical and other terms. Prepares indices of witnesses and exhibits; responds to participants’ requests regarding courtroom proceedings. Performs real time transcription as requested by the Court. May provide lead work coordination for per diem court reporters as needed. Qualifications: Prefer one year as a certified Court Reporter, or any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. Valid State of California certification as a Court Reporter required. Knowledge of: Court operations including relevant laws, regulations, legislation, rules, policies and procedures; legal terminology and procedures and documents used in court cases; problem solving techniques; principles and practices of interpersonal and customer service relations; principles and practices of court reporting and legal record keeping; proper English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Ability to: Coordinate the work of other staff; analyze problems and complaints and identify solutions; gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion; establish and maintain working relationships; effectively represent the Court in answering questions, responding to inquiries, providing assistance, and in dealing with concerns from the public, judicial officers, court staff, and others; operate stenotype machine to record court proceedings; prepare accurate and complete official written record; write in “real time” with computer assisted transcription; maintain confidentiality of courtroom proceedings; meet stringent deadlines; work independently. DIGITAL COURT REPORTER: Administrative Office of the Courts, Florida. Summary: The position of Digital Court Reporter performs responsible work throughout the five counties of the circuit related to capturing and maintaining a verbatim record of court proceedings. Work is performed under the direction of the Electronic Court Reporting Manager. Duties: Operates electronic recording and transcribing systems to record, tag and transcribe court proceedings. Responsible for proper archiving and accessing of an electronic copy of a court proceeding. Performs duties related to maintaining and storing court recordings, responding to requests for court recordings, transcription services, and other related duties. Maintains a professional demeanor at all times and establishes effective working relationships with judges, court personnel, Offices of the Clerks of the Court, Office of the State Attorney, Public Defender’s Office, other state agencies, members of the bar, and the general public. Produce media requests. Qualifications: Graduation from a standard high school or GED equivalent and two years of advanced stenographic work in the court system, legal field or criminal justice environment or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience. Working knowledge of the court system, courtroom procedures, the local bar, and legal documents and legal terminology is highly desirable. Salary: $31,043.76. (2006)

OFFICIAL COURT SHORTHAND REPORTER: Waterloo, Iowa. Duties: To serve as the courts official court reporter for an Associate Juvenile Court Judge. This position primarily serves Black Hawk, but also includes the counties of Allamakee, Buchanan, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Grundy, Howard and Winneshiek Counties. Travel to other counties within the district is required. Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited high school (GED); graduation from a school of court reporting with courses including legal and medical terminology, English, typing and law. Must be certified as a court reporter by the Iowa Board of Shorthand Reporters. Salary:$1,655.20 -$2,456.80 bi-weekly, plus State of Iowa benefit package. (2006)

COURT REPORTER SUPERVISOR 2: Passaic County Courthouse, Paterson, NJ. Summary: The New Jersey Judiciary seeks a well-organized individual to supervise and coordinate the work activities of the vicinage’s court reporters under the direction of the Assignment Judge and the Court Executive 3A (Deputy Clerk, Appellate Division). Duties: This individual will assign official court reporters to cover Superior Court judges and to record various judicial proceedings; provides verbatim record of such judicial proceedings; arranges for storage of court reporter notes; monitors preparation and filing of transcripts and prepares transcript reports; completes data entry requirements for computer programs; monitors court reporter attendance; evaluates official court reporter performance and provides coaching and counseling to improve performance; and performs related work as required. Qualifications: Successful completion of course work at an accredited school of court reporters training. Five years of full-time experience producing verbatim records of proceedings in a court as an Official Court Reporter. Possession of a valid Certified Shorthand Reporter license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Shorthand Reporting. Special Note: The Official Court Reporter shall provide the basic equipment necessary to perform the duties of the position. Salary: $55,491 - $86,936. (2005)

COURT REPORTER: Centre Arial"> County Government, Court Administration, PA. Qualifications: High school diploma equivalent plus a 2-year degree from a court reporting school and certification. Excellent computer skills required. Two to four years in a legal environment. Salary: $30,576 - $45,435. (2005)

DIGITAL COURT REPORTER: Twentieth Judicial Circuit, Ft. Myers, Florida. Summary: This position performs responsible work throughout the five counties of the circuit related to capturing and maintaining a verbatim record of court proceedings. The position is responsible for proper archiving and accessing of an electronic copy of a court proceeding. The Digital Court Reporter will establish effective working relationships with judges, court personnel, Offices of the Clerks of the Court, Office of the State Attorney, Public Defender's Office, other state agencies, members of the bar, and the general public. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Electronic Court Reporting Manager. Qualifications: Graduation from a standard high school or GED equivalent and two years of advanced stenographic work in the court system, legal field or criminal justice environment. Notary certification in the State of Florida is preferred.  Certification from the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (AAERT) may be required at the discretion of the Chief Judge or Designee.** A valid Florida Driver's License is required. Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation and spelling of spoken word. Ability to use and understand the applicable analog and/or digital recording system for recording and transcribing proceedings.  Ability to type 35 correct words per minute. Ability to use a personal computer in a Windows environment.  Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and e-mail applications, such as Word and Excel.  Ability to use the Internet.** A typing test is required. COURT REPORTER: Superior Court of California, County of Kern. Summary: Court reporters are required by statute and law to accurately take down the proceedings held in court, juvenile, civil, criminal, and before the grand jury, and to be able to provide a verbatim transcription of the proceedings when a transcript is required by law or statute or when requested. Court reporters operate real time equipment and read back proceedings proficiently as needed. Qualifications: High School graduation or equivalent and a license issued by the Certified Shorthand Reporters Board of California, Department of Consumer Affairs.  Court reporters must maintain licensure to ensure continued employment. A photocopy of the current license is required with the employment application.  Court reporters mush have equipment with real time capability and the reporter must be able to proficiently do read back when requested. Salary: $4,144 - $5,069/month. (2004)

OFFICIAL COURT REPORTER: One full-time position with the Yakima County Superior Court, Yakima, WA . Duties: Reports court proceedings verbatim by shorthand machine; indexes court notes and files them with the County Clerk ; reads back shorthand notes; and transcribes proceedings as needed. Qualifications: Requires Washington State Certification or equivalent from other state. Real Time court reporting experience with premier power software is preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish and Certification by the National Court Reporters Association at 225 wpm is desirable. Annual salary: $36,972 - $44,940, depending on experience.  (1998)

COURT REPORTER: Mohave County Superior Court, Kingman, Arizona. Summary: Records and transcribes court proceedings and prepares transcripts. Qualifications: include completion of a formal court reporter curriculum and compliance with A.R.S. § 12-222.  Annual salary range:  $32,323 - $37,336. (1998)

COURT REPORTER II: for the State of Colorado in the District Court located in Fort Collins. Summary: Provides professional verbatim reporting and transcribing for court proceedings, hearings, and conferences. Qualifications: Requires submitting proof of certification as a Registered Professional Reporter through the National Court Reporter's Association; graduation from an accredited school of reporting or associate degree in reporting and one year of experience in verbatim shorthand reporting and transcribing.  Experienced or capability in using real-time reporting highly desirable.  Monthly Salary Range: $2,927 - $3,922, with excellent benefits. OFFICIAL COURT REPORTER: Centre County Court of Common Pleas, 49th Judicial District, Bellefonte, PA. Duties: include taking and transcribing stenographic records of all court proceedings and preparing court orders and other related proceedings with a high degree of accuracy. Qualifications: A degree from an accredited court reporting curriculum, one year's experience freelancing or in a court setting is preferred. The ability to operate a stenotype machine and good computer skills are required. Starting annual salary: $23,985 plus benefits including medical insurance, $2 per page for transcripts, $1 per order. COURT REPORTER:  State of Hawaii, Judiciary. OFFICIAL COURT REPORTER: Third District Court, Salt Lake City, Utah. Qualifications: Certified shorthand reporter with proficiency in computer aided transcription, a working knowledge of CIC (computer integrated courtroom) and Real Time capability.  This is a full-time position with overtime occasionally required. All equipment and supplies are provided by the state including state-of-the-art writers, computers and software. Position begins  January 5, 1998. Salary is negotiable depending upon skill certification and experience but will fall into one of the following ranges: CIC Proficient - $30,882 - $46,354; CRR Certification - $34,410 - $51,657. COURT REPORTER: Fourth Judicial District, Provo, Utah. Summary: Position for a certified shorthand reporter who is CIC (Computer Integrated Courtroom) capable with the ability to write “real time” and who is looking for an opportunity with the Utah State Courts in a pooling arrangement with other court reporters. This job currently provides a base income, with opportunity for additional income through transcript preparation. As circumstances evolve, additional income through transcript preparation may be subject to change. A generous fringe benefits package is included. This career service exempt position may be subject to a future reduction in force due to changes in court reporting technology or other factors. Starting annual salary range: $25,953 - $32,217 (negotiable, based upon experience). COURT REPORTER: State of Hawaii, Judiciary. Temporary vacancy (duration of one year) on the island of Maui and permanent vacancies on the island of O’ahu. Duties: Takes verbatim records of court proceedings; transcribes and certifies typewritten transcripts; and performs other duties as required. OFFICIAL COURT REPORTER: Neosho County District Court, Chanute, Kansas. Duties:  work involves performing highly difficult work in taking and accurately transcribing verbatim testimony at judicial trials, hearings, and conferences. Work entails full responsibility for the preparation of a complete and accurate report of proceedings which may involve highly technical terminology used in a number of different fields. Notes are taken at a high rate of speed and may not be transcribed until some period of time has elapsed. Work is performed in accordance with procedures established by a judge and is reviewed upon completion for accuracy and content. Qualifications:  graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in typing and stenotype operation, and experience in typing and taking high-speed dictation through the use of a stenotype machine. Necessary special requirement: certificate as a certified reporter issued in compliance with applicable Supreme Court rules. SENIOR COURT REPORTER: New York State Unified Court System.  Duties:  verbatim recording and transcription of testimony in trials, conferences, arraignments, and hearings; related clerical duties.  Qualifications:  four years of general verbatim reporting experience, or completion of a course in court reporting and three years of general verbatim reporting experience. 250 days of per diem reporting experience may substitute for one year of full-time experience. Candidates must also pass a statewide examination consisting of a written portion and a dictation performance portion; the exam is scheduled for  May 21, 1994. Position grade: JG-27. Hiring salary, $52,379. Note: minimum requirements to take the exam are somewhat lower than those required for the position. Exam results will be used to fill appropriate positions throughout the unified court system. OFFICIAL COURT REPORTER: Ninth Judicial Circuit, Orlando, Florida. Duties:  stenographically record and transcribe circuit criminal court proceedings. Qualifications:  prefer certificate as a registered professional reporter. Salary range:  $30,000 - $50.000. (1994)

CHIEF COURT REPORTER: Superior Court, San Diego, California. Duties: The incumbent manages the court reporter division; staffs departments with official and pro tem reporters; evaluates and hires staff; maintains personnel, attendance, and accounting records; and acts as a liaison with attorneys and the general public. Qualifications: include three years of experience as a CSR in a large urban court and certification as a certified managing reporter by the NSRA, or five years of experience as a CSR in a large urban court. Salary is $49,729-60,443 annually. (1991)

OFFICIAL COURT REPORTER: 25th Judicial District, Garden City, Kansas. Summary: The incumbent must be available for assignment to any court within the district to take accurate records of court proceedings and transcribe those records; may be assigned to another district by departmental justice; and performs administrative duties for assigned judge.  Qualifications: include certification from the Kansas Certified Shorthand Reporter examination.  Equivalent combination of education and experience will be evaluated.  Salary is $2,112-2,971 monthly.  (1991)

Director, Court Reporting

ADMINISTRATOR OF COURT RECORDS TECHNOLOGY: Trial Courts of Arizona in Maricopa County, AZ. Summary: Responsible for the operations of the Court Reporters and Electronic Courtrooms for the Trial Courts in Maricopa County. Duties: Improve and monitor vendor(s) selection and compliance in support of courtroom technology; regional implementation and support functions; and electronic and court reporter records service support. Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university and eight years of progressively responsible administrative and management experience. A Master’s degree from a accredited college or university may substitute for the experience required on a year for year basis. Preferred: Knowledge of the principles and practices of management, administration, budget, personnel, strategic planning, public affairs, and communication and information technologies. Experience developing RFP’s, contract/vendor selection and monitoring, and experience with electronic and traditional court recordkeeping services. Salary: $50,211 - $75,337. (2006) 

DIRECTOR, COURT REPORTING SERVICES DIVISION: Administrative Office of the Courts, Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, Miami, Florida. Duties:  supervises, directs, organizes, and assigns a group of court reporters, recorders, transcribers, and support staff; establishes and implements policy as it relates to court reporting; creates training program for court reporting personnel; creates a documentation manual, prepares and maintains statistical data; and prepares and submits necessary information for budget preparation. Qualifications:  knowledge of CAT equipment and the administration of court reporting business; bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, business, or public administration or related field. Five years’ experience in justice system, including at least two years of court reporting experience. Certification as a certified managing reporter (CMR) by the National Court Reporting Association plus two years administrative/supervisory experience. Salary range:  $48,095-$74,561. MANAGING COURT REPORTER: Office of Court Operations, Director of State Courts, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Duties:  plan, organize, and direct the provision of court-reporting and transcript-production services to the court; schedule assignments to assure adequate courtroom coverage and timely production of transcripts; oversee personnel administration. Qualifications:  two years of recent court reporter management experience; two years of recent courtroom-based court-reporting experience (must be within the last five years); completion of the National Court Reporters Association's Certified manager of Reporting Services (CMRS) program; Register Professional Reporter Certification from the National court Reporters Association or successful completion o the Wisconsin Court Reporter Examination; and proven ability to use WordPerfect and spreadsheet software (Lotus 1-2-3).  Starting salary, $45,000-50,000 annually, depending on background.  (1994)
