Course Overview:
Managing a high profile trial is a little like being the ringmaster for a three-ring circus. The trial judge must keep the case moving forward while accommodating the needs of the media, jurors, security, and other court personnel -- and all without unduly disrupting other legitimate business taking place within the courthouse. In this two-day workshop, judges will learn proven techniques to manage a notorious trial from beginning to end. Using examples of effective, and not-so-effective, approaches from recent high profile trials, the workshop focuses heavily on pretrial management issues including judicial leadership and collaboration with essential court personnel; media relations including relevant First Amendment requirements; jury selection and management; and contemporary security concerns. The workshop faculty are Paula Hannaford-Agor, co-author of Managing Notorious Trials (NCSC 1998), and Judge William Caprathe, 18th Judicial Court of Michigan.
