     Latest Table of Contents:

“Judicial Conduct and Ethics” is the topic of a special issue of the National Center for State Courts’ Justice System Journal (vol. 28, no 3). This issue brings together prominent judges, attorneys, court administrators, and scholars with many different perspectives on judicial ethics, particularly in the wake of the American Bar Association’s recently adopted Model Code of Judicial Conduct and the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in a landmark case involving speech in judicial elections: Republican Party of Minnesota v. White (2002).  This issue is also dedicated to the memory of our former Editor-in-Chief Susette Talarico.

Submissions to Justice System Journal

The Justice System Journal invites submission of articles and notes that are likely to be of interest to practitioners and scholars in the field of law, courts, and judicial administration, broadly defined. Articles may draw on a variety of research approaches in the social sciences.

Manuscripts should not exceed 45 total pages, which include end material (appendixes, notes, references, tables, and figures). Under most circumstances, manuscripts longer than 45 total pages will not be reviewed. Note that these length guidelines assume that all textual material (abstract, text, notes, appendices, and references) are double-spaced. If a submission contains any single-spaced material, then the length requirements will be adjusted accordingly. Short articles written by practitioners or researchers that describe management innovations in court systems as well as short manuscripts analyzing cases or legal issues of particular relevance to judicial administration are welcome. The Journal does not publish articles devoted to extended analysis of legal doctrine.

Inquiries to the editor about topic ideas that authors are considering are welcome.

Submissions to the Journal may not be under consideration by any other publication.

Manuscripts are evaluated by two or more reviewers; both practitioners and scholars may participate in the review process. To facilitate the review process, references that reveal the identity of authors should be deleted from the manuscript and placed on a separate page; the author’s name, institutional affiliation, e-mail address, and any acknowledgments should appear only on a cover sheet.

A manuscript submitted for consideration should be accompanied by an abstract of approximately 100 words. Manuscripts should be double-spaced and prepared with ample margins, on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, one side per page. Use of footnotes extensive in number or length is discouraged; footnotes should be placed on a separate page, double-spaced. Submission of manuscripts in Journal style is preferred and accepted manuscripts must ultimately be revised by the author to conform to it. While the Journal will accept regular mail submission, electronic submissions are preferred, and will result in a faster turnaround time. Accepted manuscripts must then be submitted either in Word 2000 or WordPerfect 8.0 (or higher) word-processing format, as an e-mail attachment.

  • Two (2) electronic copies of all manuscripts—one with a face sheet with all necessary contact information, including institutional affiliation, title (e.g., Assistant Professor, Associate Professor), email address, and telephone number, and one with all identifying references removed—should be submitted in either Word or pdf format to
