NCSC Honors
Court Leaders
The
National Center has presented two national awards to state court leaders since
March 2003.
North
Dakota Chief Justice Gerald W. VandeWalle received the Paul C. Reardon Award,
named after the late Massachusetts Supreme Court justice who was the first
president of the National Center’s Board of Directors. Chief Justice
VandeWalle is a past president of the Conference of Chief Justices, a former
chair of NCSC’s Board of Directors, and past chair of the National Center’s
Research Advisory Council. Prior to being named to the state supreme court bench
in 1978, Chief Justice VandeWalle served as the state’s special assistant
attorney general and the state’s first assistant attorney general.
District
Judge Steve Leben of Kansas’ Johnson County District Court was presented the
Distinguished Service Award for his longstanding contributions to improving the
justice system and supporting the mission of the National Center. Judge Leben
has served as editor-in-chief of Court Review since 1998, and he’s credited
with elevating the publication so that it’s now recognized nationally as a
forum for authoritative and original coverage of important legal issues.
