ICM Extra: Find Grants and
Manage Resources
To help courts cope in
difficult financial times, the Institute for Court Management added Grants
in Court Administration to its 2002 course schedule to provide
administrators with tools to find grant money, especially using the Web.
The
course was so well-received it’s being offered again this year in
Williamsburg, Virginia, September 15-17. ICM Fellow Jeff Barlow, senior
associate with the Hawthorne Institute, will focus on using the Web
to identify grants and to help locate and understand funding sources that
focus on state/federal programs. The administrative section will
explore Web-based application and grant management and discuss State
Justice Institute and Department of Justice grants. A quick review
and examples using the Court Performance Standards as a framework for
justifying funding requests also will be explored.
“We
knew, given the current budget climate, that the courts needed to know how
to find and better manage grant programs,” said Kent Wagner, education
program director for ICM. “Courts frequently are asked to initiate
programs or undertake endeavors without funding, or with the requirement
that they secure funding and demonstrate the viability of the program
before their funding agency will support the program on an ongoing basis.
When faced with these situations, court personnel often turn to
grant-making agencies for that initial funding. This course gives
them the tools to do it better.”
Managing
Court Financial Resources
is another ICM course that helps participants navigate through challenging
economic times. This course is about developing a managerial
approach to the budget planning and budget-justification process.
Participants engage in strategic thinking and planning for their courts—their resources, activities, and objectives. Faculty members
demonstrate how to identify and apply strategies and techniques to acquire
funds, make better use of existing funds, and set priorities for courts
when funds are limited. The next offering of this course will be in
Scottsdale, Arizona, November 17-19, 2003.
