National Court Organizations Announce 2009-10 Leadership

Utah Chief Justice, Ohio Supreme Court Director Tapped to Serve

Williamsburg, VA (Aug. 13, 2009) – The National Center for State Courts, Conference of Chief Justices, and Conference of State Court Administrators have named Utah Chief Justice Christine M. Durham and Steven C. Hollon, administrative director of the Supreme Court of Ohio, to top leadership positions.

Chief Justice Durham will chair the National Center’s Board of Directors and serve as president of the chief justices organization. Hollon will serve as vice-chair of the National Center’s Board of Directors and president of the national conference for top state court officials. Both will serve in their positions for one year.

“The support and guidance of those who work in our nation’s courts every day, both on the bench and behind it, is absolutely vital to the work of the National Center,” said Mary C. McQueen, president of the National Center for State Courts. “Both Chief Justice Durham and Steve Hollon bring knowledge, experience, and commitment to these leadership positions and all three organizations, which aim to improve the administration of justice, will benefit from their guidance.”

Founded in 1949 and comprised of the top judicial officers of each state, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories, the Conference of Chief Justices promotes the interests and effectiveness of state judicial systems by developing policies and educational programs designed to improve court operations. CCJ also acts as the primary representative of the state courts before Congress and federal executive agencies.

The Conference of State Court Administrators is comprised of the chief executive officers of the court systems in each state, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories. The conference is committed to strengthening the judicial branch by improving the quality of state courts and increasing the public’s trust and confidence in the justice system.

The National Center for State Courts, headquartered in Williamsburg, Va., is a nonprofit court reform organization dedicated to improving the administration of justice by providing leadership and service to the state courts. The National Center, founded in 1971 by the Conference of Chief Justices and Chief Justice of the United States Warren E. Burger, provides education, training, and technology, management, and research services to the nation's state courts.
