Munsterman Honored With ABA’s Jury System Impact AwardWilliamsburg, Va. (June 3, 2008) – G. Thomas Munsterman, Director Emeritus of the National Center for State Courts’ Center for Jury Studies, is a recipient of the American Bar Association’s 2008 Jury System Impact Award. The award honors those who have made tremendous efforts toward the improvement, preservation, and strengthening of the American jury system. The award is given annually by the ABA Commission on the American Jury Project. Munsterman has spent more than 30 years working to improve the process of trial by jury. He was one of the incorporators of the NCSC’s Center for Jury Studies and helped plan and conduct Jury Summit 2001, where more than 400 judges, attorneys, academics, and jurors learned about progress in jury system improvement efforts. Munsterman has also strived to educate on the subject of juries, serving as faculty for many judicial education programs and testifying as the court’s witness in cases concerning jury representativeness and jury management. He has written extensively about the jury system, including papers, books. and articles in prominent, national publications. He has worked with the ABA/JC Committee on jury standards since its inception, helping to develop, implement, and revise trial court jury standards. In 2004, he was appointed to the American Bar Association’s Commission on the American Jury and it’s American Jury Project. The Jury System Impact Award will be presented in August at the ABA’s 2008 annual meeting in New York, NY. Judge Judith S. Kaye, chief judge of New York, will also be honored. The inaugural Jury System Impact Award was presented last year to Robert J. Grey Jr. and Judge B. Michael Dann. Founded in 1971, the National Center for State Courts is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the administration of justice by providing leadership, research, technology, and education services to the state courts. Since 2000, over 500 court professionals from across the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have achieved certification.
