Former President of Justice Management Institute Receives
Award from National Court Organization

Williamsburg, Va. (April 12, 2008) – Barry Mahoney, president emeritus of the Justice Management Institute (JMI), has been named recipient of the Warren E. Burger Award, presented by the National Center for State Courts. The Burger Award is given annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to court administration, management, education, training, research, or consulting. Former Chief Justice of the United States Warren E. Burger helped found the National Center for State Courts in 1971.

“Barry Mahoney’s rich knowledge of the law and his unending dedication to the justice system, have contributed greatly to improving services in courts across the country and abroad,” said NCSC President Mary C. McQueen, who presented Mahoney the award at a ceremony April 12 in Denver.

Mr. Mahoney helped found JMI, a Colorado-based nonprofit organization, and served as its president from 1993 to 2002. In addition to continuing work on JMI projects, Mahoney most recently has served as a consultant on justice system improvement issues in Serbia, Kosovo, and Mexico. Before his work with JMI, Mahoney served as an assistant attorney general of the state of New York, as an associate director of the NCSC, as the director of the London office of the Vera Institute of Justice, and as director of research at the Institute for Court Management.

Mahoney has authored numerous articles on justice system issues and served as a lead faculty member for educational programs conducted by the National Judicial College, the National Association for Court Management, and other national, state, and local organizations.

The National Center for State Courts is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the administration of justice through leadership and service to state courts and courts around the world. The NCSC carries out this mission through its offices in Williamsburg, Va., Washington, D.C., and Denver, Colo.
