Robert Peck Receives Top Award from National Court Organization

Williamsburg, VA (July 26, 2005) – Robert Peck, president of the Center for Constitutional Litigation, P.C., is the recipient of the 2005 Distinguished Service Award, one of the highest awards presented by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC). Distinguished Service Awards are presented annually to individuals who have made longstanding contributions to the improvement of the justice system and who have supported the mission of the National Center.

Chair of the NCSC Board of Directors Shirley S. Abrahamson, Chief Justice of Wisconsin, presented Mr. Peck the award during the 2005 Annual Convention of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America in Toronto. “As a leader in the legal profession, Mr. Peck cares deeply about this country’s justice system, and the leadership and service mission of the National Center for State Courts,” Chief Justice Abrahamson said.

Mr. Peck has a proven record of dedication to the justice system and has worked diligently to improve the public’s confidence in the legal profession, Abrahamson said. “Mr. Peck is a nationally recognized and respected attorney dedicated to challenging laws that impede access to justice and he’s been an invaluable resource to the National Center.”  Through his efforts, the NCSC has established ongoing relationships with leaders of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Roscoe Pound Institute, and the American Civil Trial Bar Roundtable. He has served as a member of the NCSC’s Lawyers Committee since 2002.

Mr. Peck’s work includes teaching an advanced constitutional law seminar at American University and George Washington University. He is president of the U.S. Supreme Court Fellows Alumni Association, a member of the Board of Overseers of the RAND Corporation’s Institute for Civil Justice, and the First Amendment Advisory Council of the Media Institute. He also co-chairs the First Amendment Right Committee of the American Bar Association. He is a graduate of Yale Law School, Cleveland State University, and George Washington University.

The NCSC, headquartered in Williamsburg, VA, is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the administration of justice by providing leadership and service to the state courts. The NCSC, founded in 1971 by the Conference of Chief Justices and Chief Justice of the United States Warren E. Burger, provides education, training, and technology, management, and research services to the nation’s state courts. The NCSC also is taking the lead on several key issues facing the justice system. For example, it has established a major civil justice initiative, a multi-year project that is examining best practices in civil case management and how complex litigation procedures can be improved. Other national initiatives being driven by the NCSC include judicial selection reform and increasing citizen participation in jury service.
